COVID-19 Africa Stats: Why Are There Such Few Cases In Africa

by Mosimileoluwa Alabi/31 March 2020 Last updated on Compared to other continents and countries, there have been fewer reported cases of the COVID-19 infection in Africa. According to a tweet by Africa Center for Disease Control (Africa CDC), on 31st March 2020, ?#COVID19-SURVEILLANCE UPDATE: 31 MARCH 2020- 5:00 pm EAT. African Union Member States (48) reporting COVID-19 cases (5,413), deaths (172), and recoveries (387) by region? On 11th March 2020, the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a pandemic. Africa was initially spared of the virus, however this is changing quickly. In the last two weeks, the number of affected African countries increased from 9 to 48. The big question is why are there a few cases in Africa? As we all know, quite a number of African countries have crippled health systems, Africans value social gatherings-an avenue for the spread of the virus- and finally Africa has a very high prevalence of malnutrition, HIV/AIDS, Anemia, and malaria. All these factors put together are enough to spur the spread of the virus and result in increased death rates. However, let?s take a look at factors that might have possibly brought about a reduced number of deaths. Africa's Demography Firstly, Africa?s demographic structure is different from other parts of the world. The?median age of the population in Africa?is 19.7 years. In comparison, the?median age in China?is 38.4 years, and in Europe,?it is: 43.1 years. Cases in Asia and Europe showed that people over 60 years and those with underlying health problems are most vulnerable to severe cases of COVID-19. Although, there have been reports of the deaths of young people as COVID-19 is a virus that affects all age groups. COVID-19 and The Environment Secondly, there have been speculations around the environment and the virus spread. Among the several factors that play huge roles in a virus spread, air temperature is an important factor. Studies in time past show that cold, dry temperatures encourage the transmission of influenza and respiratory viruses. Despite the uncertainties surrounding the environment that encourages the spread of COVID-19, it seems to have followed the pattern of respiratory viruses. Scientists from Sun Yat-sen University in China concluded that ?In cold environments, there is longer virus survival than warm ones? The mean monthly temperature of most affected countries in the world-China, Italy, Iran, South Korea, Spain- shows that they have a temperature range ( from January to March) between 6 and 12 degrees Celsius. While affected African countries such as Nigeria, South Africa, Benin, Togo, Cameroon had average monthly temperatures between 20 to 32 degrees Celsius. Although, this pattern has not been fully proven and cannot thoroughly explain the few numbers of cases. Finally, since the onset of the outbreak in China, African countries were given ample time to prepare and have been taking measures to prevent the import of the virus from other countries. The greater percentage of young people in Africa, when compared to Europe and China might be an indication of the lower death rates in the continent. However, Immunocompromised people are at greater risks and ?might have serious complications such as people with HIV/AIDS, Anemia, etc Although the virus has been slow to reach Africa, there are several reasons to suspect that its imminent progression will be similar to China and the rest of the world if the necessary measures such as- protecting vulnerable groups, insisting on social distancing and improving on the health care systems- are not taken.

How long will it take to get a cure or vaccine for COVID-19 virus

by Eniola Arowosegbe/31 March 2020 Last updated on Coronavirus has brought the world to a halt as scientists around the globe are in a race against time to develop a vaccine or cure for the pandemic. The rapid spread of the virus with its increasing death rate has been a cause for major concern as there is no cure yet, medical care is only directed at treating the symptoms which include fever, sore throat and shortness of breath. As there is no cure or vaccine in sight, major attempts are aimed at mitigating transmission. What is a vaccine? A vaccine is a type of treatment aimed at stimulating the body's immune system to fight against infectious pathogens, like bacteria and viruses. The human body has a natural defense system composed of different types of white blood cells that can detect and destroy foreign bodies through various defense mechanisms. Vaccines contain antigens which stimulate the immune response from the body to help fight the future occurrence of the specific virus to be treated. Vaccines still remain one of the most effective ways of preventing diseases. Scientists revealed that despite research discoveries around the world stating that they found vaccines that have proven effective against coronavirus, it would take 18 months before these vaccines are available as they have to undergo several clinical trials to determine their safety and efficacy before they can be approved for human use and even after being approved, it will take some time to produce mass quantities enough to serve for the entire populace. How COVID-19 is being treated? Hospitals treat coronavirus patients by treating the symptoms being experienced by the patient. Antibiotics won?t work because the disease is caused by a virus, not bacteria. There is no specific antiviral treatment for COVID-19, although experimental antiviral drugs like remdesivir and favipiravir showing encouraging results in treatment. Chloroquine has also been suggested by various studies to show improvements in COVID-19 patients but neither of these drugs has been officially approved as there are still ongoing debates concerning their effectiveness. The best way to treat coronavirus still remains prevention. NCDC admonishes us to maintain social distancing, wash hands regularly or use alcohol-based hand sanitizers and practice good respiratory hygiene as we continue the fight to win this pandemic war.

False COVID-19 virus reports in Nigeria

by Stephen Akadiri/31 March 2020 Last updated on The spreading of fake news is a common phenomenon globally without Nigeria being an exception. Since the outbreak of coronavirus pandemic, there are several false information flying around the internet about the new virus. This isn't just the first case of misinformation during a global pandemic as a similar occurrence happened in 2014, during the Ebola virus outbreak. Then, a viral WhatsApp broadcast prescribed bathing with or drinking salt and hot water mixtures as a ?cure? for the dreaded disease. Despite the fact that there was no medical basis for it, the wrong prescription still went viral. This led to the death of at least two people and several others were hospitalized over excessive salt consumption. While it makes sense to be updated on reports around the coronavirus pandemic, it is also very essential not to be misinformed by false news. Here are some of the wrong information about the coronavirus disease that have been debunked since Nigeria recorded its first case: Gargling mouthwash as protection against COVID-19 virus One of the common false myths about coronavirus disease is the claim that the virus could be killed by gargling with warm water. The World Health Organization (WHO) debunked this claim on Twitter during one of its question and answer session According to WHO, there is currently no vaccine and no specific antiviral medicine to prevent or treat COVID-2019. Clinical trials are, however, ongoing to find a solution to the disease. Saline Solution There was another claim from a post that went viral on Facebook that the saline solution of warm water and salt or vinegar can cure the human coronavirus disease. This has been debunked as NHS only recommended gargling with warm saline as a solution for adults suffering from sore throat and not as a cure for coronavirus disease. Dettol A viral image of a bottle of Dettol, the well-known disinfectant used to clean surfaces, has been widely shared on social media, with people noting that the label says the surface cleaner is effective against "human coronavirus". However, Dettol has not been proven to kill or treat the new coronavirus although the use of surface cleaning solutions such as Dettols are recommended to reduce the general spread of infections. Sun as a cure There is another erroneous claim that staying in the sun for prolonged hours could kill the virus. This has not been proven and should be disregarded. You can learn about the myth of heat and coronavirus here Chloroquine Chloroquine is an antimalaria drug. It hasn't been endorsed by any medical or pharmaceutical body as a cure to the COVID-19 virus. It should be noted that if the right dosage of the drug is not used, one could suffer from its side effects and other severe clinical complications. Neem Leaf, Pawpaw Leaf, Ginger and Garlic In accordance with a tweet by the Nigeria health watch, there is no evidence that cooked neem leaves, pawpaw leaves, ginger, garlic, orange, and lime can cure coronavirus disease. While these leaves may have some antimicrobial properties, they cannot cure the new coronavirus disease. To stay updated and not be misinformed, updates from health-related bodies such as WHO, CDC, NCDC or NHS are the reliable sources one could depend on.

How to build your social media presence this period

by Rebecca/30 March 2020 Last updated on Coronavirus is shaking up business and consumer habits across the globe. There is a steady increase in the number of social media users as people believe social media usage habits will increase significantly in the event they are confined to their homes due to the Coronavirus which is the situation right now. This may come as no surprise given consumers won?t have much else to do when social distancing and self-isolating. Social media is one of the best ways to share news nowadays, in fact, some people don't know any other way. Whether it be COVID-19 news from individual states or news on a national scope, social media gets the message where it needs to go. Taking advantage of the coronavirus pandemic to build your social media presence is not a terrible idea as long as you are doing it the right way. There are various ways to build your social media presence this coronavirus period, all you have to do is know what exactly you want to be known for and make a conscious effort into building your online brand. Stay informed Staying ahead of the news is a very important factor, it gives you an edge against competitors who will just be sharing regular details. You know what is in the news and what is trending, you can incorporate it into your content in order to optimize a wider reach. You do not want to make the error of doing a yard sale when everyone is currently self-isolating and practicing social distancing. Provide solutions The only way to build a great and lasting social media presence at a time like this is to ensure that you are providing solutions and you are staying relevant. You do not expect everyone to keep coming to your page now when all you do is provide a service that is irrelevant to the current pandemic around the world. Curtail your content format to your target audience You don't target millennials and use Shakespearean language, they know the language, but would not follow because majority of them will find it boring. Ensure that whatever content Tailor your content to be channel-specific Try as much as you can to ensure that each of your contents is channel-specific. You do not want to bore people before you get to pass your message across. Don't come to Twitter with a lengthy caption unless its something you are certain will keep your audience's attention till the very end, it's the same way you should know that a tutorial video will work better on Instagram as well. You should not create a content calendar to cut across all your social media channels, try to ensure that even while you are still selling the same thing, you are going the extra mile to be channel-specific. Stay relevant You do not need to be an expert in a field to actually grow your audience in that field, all you have to do is be knowledgeable and willing to do the leg work to ensure that everything you will be sharing is factual. Create a niche that people have a need for You can decide to start doing reviews of products that you know people need or start a tutorial on something you are very good at and will help a lot at a time when people have to stay at home. Anything you decide to do, just ensure that you have created a niche for yourself in a particular field and when anyone has a need in relation to that field, your page is the first place they go to. Show empathy You do not want to get on people's toes just because they feel you are not empathic enough about the global pandemic. avoid as much as you can, contents that can be misinterpreted. And make sure that irrespective of the brand you decide to build for yourself, people love the way you go about it. Don't keep talking about parties and outings like you are a stranger to the pandemic in town. Make people yearn to visit your page The only way people will want to visit your page and get accustomed to your online brand is if they know that you have a solution to their current needs. Don't go about confusing people about your real intent, as much as you can, ensure that you are giving value. Be consistent Don't post today and expect to get a magical growth overnight, it does not happen that way. You have to be consistent at what you do and ensure that people are always getting something new and fresh each time they visit your page. Don't be stagnant and expect magic to happen, Rome was not built in a day. Ensure you don't appear too profit-oriented If you come across as someone whose only interest is to make money while people are dying of coronavirus, then you will be making some enemies more than friends. Ensure that whatever you do, you are being cautious and clear enough to make people have a need for it. Don't come across as a seller, people will run from you as they are trying to save for the uncertain days ahead. Be creative People are really bored at home these days so the same content that worked last month will not do the same magic this month. Find new and creative ways to share the same thing, do a little bit of research and add new things to educate your audience. Don't bore them with the same content. Be engaging Don't just throw your ideas out there and keep pushing it down the throats of your audience. Try as much as you can to be engaging, that way you can also get feedback directly from your audience on how to improve and you also get to entertain yourself at the same time. Ensuring your page is appealing enough to keep people coming back is the goal. You can't build your presence on social media by doing nothing. Keep at it, find your niche and don't stop pushing. There is always an audience out there for you as long as you know how to make things happen. Things to do before going into self-isolation

by Eniola Arowosegbe/26 March 2020 Last updated on Self-isolation is necessary to help prevent the spread of corona virus as the world is still struggling to contain the virus. The number of cases and deaths continue to rise, potential carriers are still roaming at large, health facilities are getting overwhelmed and testing kits are extremely limited. Latest updates by W.H.O as of 26th march shows the number of confirmed cases around the globe crossed the 500,000 mark. A worrying concern as we are approaching the peak months predicted to be April/May. With over 20,000 deaths and counting, self-isolation is the only credible solution to containing the virus. Who must self isolate? Self-isolation means staying at home and avoiding contact with people. The following conditions are the requirements for self-isolation: An individual who has had contact with a confirmed caseA returning traveler from any of the affected statesAn elderly, pregnant or fragile individualAn individual with underlying health conditions Things to do to prepare for self-isolation Stock up on food and supplies Since you will be at home for a duration of time, it is necessary to stock up on food items and other essentials, ensure to buy enough that will last you for a period of three months considering the uncertainty of things. Also, make sure you get a lot of fruits and food containing essential nutrients so you eat healthy and keep fit. Create an action plan Staying in isolation can be frustrating and boring so it?s important you compile a list of activities to keep you busy during the isolation period. You could try learning a skill, cooking, watching movies, workout challenges and any other thing that interests you. Ensure to keep in touch with friends on social media and check up on loved ones regularly. Plan for medical care and advice Considering the reality of things at the moment, going to the hospital during this period is highly discouraged. Therefore, it is in your best interest to refer to your doctor for any form of medical consultation whether corona virus related or not. Also, stock up on medicines and supplements as prescribed by your doctor.

Are young people truly immune to the coronavirus pandemic?

by Stephen Akadiri/26 March 2020 Last updated on Due to the novelty nature of the COVID-19 virus otherwise called coronavirus, there have been claims by different people and media houses over the world regarding the transmission of the virus, the fatality rate, and the vulnerable age groups even as scientists continue working on discovering more facts about the new virus. According to the studies across different age groups infected by the coronavirus disease, statistics have clearly shown that the death rate increases with increasing age groups, as age 80 and above are at the highest risk. A graphical representation of the death rate across different age groups Does this now mean that mean young people do not get infected at all? If they do, can the virus kill them? Do young people really have some form of natural protection against the virus or not? Attempts will be made to carefully answer these questions as we journey together in this article. Do young people get infected? First, there is very little data on the effect of the COVID-19 virus on young people but recent studies have shown that even with children, some groups are more vulnerable than others depending on age and health conditions. So, technically, all age groups are prone to the virus. Second, there has been at least a reported case of a kid infected with the COVID-19 virus who suffered serious lung disease. It should also be noted that kids with simultaneous respiratory infections can be more vulnerable to the virus. Infants without mature immune systems easily become infected by the virus. Yet compared to older adults, the COVID-19 virus appears to be less severe in most kids and young adults and the reason behind this is still not very clear to many scientists and medical practitioners. While it might seem logical to assume young people's immune system are relatively stronger when compared to old adults, their body defence system cannot still prevent them from contracting the viral disease. In an online news conference from WHO headquarters, one of the World Health Organization officials, Mr. Tedros said: "Although older people are hardest hit, younger people are not spared." Mr. Tedros added:?"I have a message for young people: You are not invincible, this virus could put you in hospital for weeks or even kill you. Even if you don't get sick the choices you make about where you go could be the difference between life and death for someone else." Read what you should do if you get infected and top hygienic tips to keep you away from the coronavirus disease. Why should young people be wary of coronavirus pandemic? Young people infected by the virus can transmit it, even if they don?t get very sick. And the particular concern is that they are likely to spread it to someone with a weakened or compromised immune system or even spread it to someone with an underlying health condition. That means hygienic practices ? from?proper hand-washing?to?social distancing?? are just as important for the young and healthy as they are for people who are older people too.
