How you can stay safe if you're travelling during coronavirus pandemic

by Joel/25 March 2020 Last updated on If you?re in any part of Nigeria, it is generally advised that you practice social distancing with the ongoing spread of COVID-19. This means staying at home when you do not need to go out. While most business meetings, conferences, shows and events have been postponed until further notice, going out or travelling might be inevitable for some. And that is understandable. For those people, social distancing means that you should maintain a distance of at least 1 metre (about 3 feet) from the next person when you?re in public. This is to ensure that you do not contract coronavirus (or transmit it unwittingly). If you need to travel and you?re worried about exposing yourself, the following tips can help you stay safe while you are out. Using masks Health professionals have advised that most people do not need masks because,a) it will do next to nothing to prevent you from contracting the virus if you do not wear it properly, andb) a cloth mask and most masks used by the public can still allow air particles through. Those who really need to wear a mask are people who are showing symptoms such as coughing. But really, if you are experiencing any of the symptoms of the coronavirus you shouldn?t be outside. However, if your travel is taking you to an area that has confirmed cases of coronavirus, then wearing a mask might not be a bad idea. Usually, an N95 respirator would be the ideal mask but it might be difficult to obtain at this time. Because health workers need it more to attend to people who actually have the virus and also because it is very difficult to breathe through. Disinfecting your hands This is the most effective way to protect you against getting the virus. This is because COVID-19 is mostly contracted when you come in direct contact with an infected person?s body fluid or when you touch a surface that an infected person has coughed or sneezed on. It is very important that you thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds regularly. In case you find yourself in a place where you cannot use soap and water, it is advisable to carry an alcohol-based hand sanitiser with you. The goal is to make sure that your hands are clean at all times because, really, we tend to touch our face without thinking about it. This way, even when you come in contact with an infected surface, sanitising your hands regularly will likely save you when you absentmindedly touch your face. Wearing gloves You might have seen a lot of people wearing gloves to protect their hands, or you also wear them.?You might want to know that WHO says that wearing rubber gloves while out in public is not effective in preventing infection of COVID-19. And that washing your bare hands offers more protection than wearing gloves.Seriously, wash your hands regularly if you want to stay safe. But if you feel safer wearing gloves, please note that it should not replace proper handwashing. Also, do not to wear the same pair of gloves for an extended period of time because you can still pick up coronavirus even while wearing gloves. And when you touch your face with an infected glove, you can be infected.? So change gloves often, if you choose to wear them, and properly dispose of them. Also, wash your hands after you take off the gloves. Eating in public If you are on a trip you might have to eat out. The World Health Organisation has advised individuals to avoid consuming raw or undercooked animal products. Coronaviruses are susceptible to normal cooking temperatures (70?). So you should eat well-cooked food and may have to watch your consumption of refrigerated or uncooked foods (e.g. sandwiches and salads). This is because while investigations are ongoing to determine the survival time of SARS-CoV-2 (the virus responsible for COVID-19), another strain of coronavirus (MERS-CoV) is known to remain viable at 4? for up to 72 hours. Remember that if you feel unwell, you should stay at home for your safety and that of the general public. And if you are showing any of the symptoms of COVID-19, you should call the NCDC toll-free line to be sure of what to do. Also, if you have no reason to be out, please stay indoors and do these fun things or boost your productivity with these tips.

Coronavirus in Nigeria: 5 Things To Do If You Are Coughing

by Mosimileoluwa Alabi/25 March 2020 Last updated on So you?ve been coughing and you?re beginning to panic because it could be you know what. You are wondering, should I take cough syrups, call a doctor or go to the nearest hospital ASAP? With the spread of the Coronavirus in Nigeria, and the symptoms that trail the virus, it can be hard to know the next step to take and even harder to stay calm. This is why we have curated a list of things to do if you are coughing and think you have the Coronavirus. Stay At Home Till You Are Sure In staying at home, practice self-isolation and sterilize everything around you. Hospitals are already getting stressed and it doesn?t help that patients who probably do not have the virus come running to the hospital. Do not rush to the hospital if you feel a bit under the weather. Rather, self-isolate and monitor the progressive symptoms.  Stay Calm If you have not been potentially exposed to an infected person, stay calm. If you have, still stay calm and monitor the symptoms-fever, headaches, fatigue, and shortness of breath- for 10-14 days in self-isolation. After that, you?d know if you?re to call the hospital or visit it. Then your health care provider can work with NCDC and determine if you need to be evaluated in person or tested. Call A Doctor Instead of Visiting The Hospital or Pharmacy Without An Appointment This is because you are still uncertain about having the virus so it?ll give the doctors the ability to keep you from getting infected or infecting other people. Drink Enough Water and Eat Well We cannot underestimate the importance of a good diet. A good diet helps to boost your immune system. If you fall under the category of vulnerable people, you need to be extra cautious. Call your health care provider if you show any symptoms and eat well. Get Information From The Right Sources It is important to get information about the Coronavirus in Nigeria from reliable sources such as the NCDC and hotels.ng/guides. ?This will help you stay calm and not also spread the wrong information.

Corona virus latest: Italy death toll rises

by Eniola Arowosegbe/25 March 2020 Last updated on Around the globe, the corona virus battle intensifies as some countries are making progress while some are experiencing setbacks. The virus which originated in Wuhan, China in December 2019 has moved across borders and continents spreading rapidly at an alarming rate. Countries around the world are implementing necessary measures to limit the spread of the virus, schools and universities are being shut down, businesses are being closed except those producing essential goods and services and restrictions on movement are being enforced. Some countries such as Italy, Spain, France and Britain have imposed a national lockdown while countries such as Nigeria, Canada, Germany, Ivory Coast, and many others restricted movements in affected states. These measures are beginning to show positive effects as some countries have testified that the surge in the number of new cases continues to decline. Situation updates around the world The corona virus pandemic continues to spread across the globe. Presently, W.H.O has established that at least 177 countries have confirmed cases of corona virus. Current statistics puts the number of confirmed cases in the world is 421, 413 with the death toll being 18,810. The number of recovered cases is 108,388 leaving the number of active cases at 294,215. The epicentre of the pandemic is Europe with the worst hit being Italy recording over 6,500 deaths and Spain coming in second with over 2,500 deaths. Heavy restrictions are being placed globally to limit the spread as health facilities are being overwhelmed amidst fears of an imminent collapse if the numbers keep increasing. What is the cure for corona virus? There is no specific vaccine or antiviral treatment known to prevent or cure corona virus at the moment, although there is ongoing research on vaccines and drugs for treatment of the virus. Various pharmaceuticals and biotech companies have come up with vaccines and drugs in various stages of development with claims that they showed positive infects in treatment but they are yet to undergo clinical trials hence not fit for human use. At the moment, the best way to eliminate corona virus is to practice social distancing, good respiratory hygiene, wash hands regularly with soap and water or use alcohol-based sanitizers with at least 60% alcohol, disinfect and clean frequently touched objects and surfaces. This way, you get to limit the spread of the pandemic and keep yourself safe.

Signs showing that you DO NOT have the Corona Virus

by Stephen Akadiri/24 March 2020 Last updated on Since the outbreak of the novel COVID-19 virus worldwide, there are so many information out there revolving around what the virus is and what is not. The increasing number of cases recorded in Nigeria and how the virus has affected several businesses and daily human interaction has made the matter a great concern. Despite governmental regulations to prevent people from staying in overcrowded places and encouraging social distancing and self-isolation, most people still go about their daily businesses moving from one place to the other, especially via public vehicles. While it is possible to have contact with an asymptomatic carrier of the contagious Coronavirus, it should be noted that most people will not see any symptoms until about 2 - 14 days of infection according to World Health Organization (WHO) and Centre for Diseases Control (CDC). Before I highlight some of the vivid signs to prove you do not have the virus in your body system, you might want to quickly check out the progressive symptoms of Corona Virus first. So how can you be so sure you are free from the coronavirus pandemic even when you are feeling sick? Evaluate your chances of being infected: First, you need to genuinely ask yourself some series of questions. Have you been to any crowded places recently? Did you by any means come in contact with anyone who has tested positive for the COVID-19 virus? Can you remember the last time anyone close to you sneezed or coughed? Did you come in contact with anyone who recently travelled from a region with a high risk of the infection? These questions among others can help you weigh the risk of being infected.Carry out preliminary checks: COVID-19 virus basically affects the respiratory system. One of the common symptoms associated with people infected with coronavirus is shortness of breath often accompanied with cough, fever and sometimes sore throat. If your medical case is totally different from this, you may be suffering from another health condition different from coronavirus. However, if you are suspecting that you may have been infected with the virus, the best thing to do is to isolate yourself at home and call the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) Toll-free number: 080097000010 Only laboratory tests or medical diagnosis can ascertain who is positive for the novel coronavirus or not. Disregard the erroneous information about self-diagnosis such as holding your breath for 10 minutes without sneezing and drinking a lot of water. Medical experts all over the world have revealed that none of these activities can help discover or curtail the coronavirus disease. The best way to prevent contracting the virus is to avoid exposing yourself in the first place by observing common hygienic practices such as regular washing of hands, keeping surfaces clean, and staying away from crowded areas or people who have tested positive for the coronavirus. https://hotels.ng/guides/corona-virus/things-you-should-know-when-you-get-the-corona-virus/

How to deal with power issues while working from home

by Nnamdi/24 March 2020 Last updated on Since the first recorded case of Coronavirus in Nigeria, Nigerians have been advised to practice good hygiene to prevent coronavirus . As the number of cases increased, the Government had to shutdown gatherings, this included churches, mosques, and schools. Business owners were advised to ask their staff to no longer come to work and should instead adopt a Work From Home approach. While in theory, this makes sense, we truly want to stop the transmission of this coronavirus, a major pain point for many remote workers is the epileptic power supply. Another major issue remote workers face is poor internet connection, although the effect of poor internet connection has been mitigated by the adoption of 4G broadband by most internet service providers in Nigeria. In order to properly self-isolate and still ensure you don't receive a query because your laptop battery is dead when you are meant to be on a video call to discuss the next business strategy, you should continue reading this article. Get a Generator - By now, I am certain every one in Nigeria knows the importance of getting a generator. Almost every home has one and if you are going to be working from home, you should. Generators come with its financial implications. You need to ensure it is fueled daily, it is properly serviced, regularly change the oil.Get a solar inverter: Solar inverters can be lifesavers during this remote period. Although, they can be quite expensive as the cost of an inverter with battery can be from 120k to as much as 500k. Portable Energy inverters: This mini inverter is a good and affordable choice for remote workers. This portable inverter can charge your laptops for an entire day as well as power your television and other household devices. This device is affordable at just $155 excluding shipping and might be a very good pocket friendly choice right now. As more cases of coronavirus in Nigeria are being reported ensuring you sort out your power issues is now paramount. Read about fun things you can do while staying at home

The Myth About Heat and CoronaVirus

by Mosimileoluwa Alabi/23 March 2020 Last updated on I once heard a woman say, ?God deliberately increased the temperature from heaven so that it will kill this Corona Virus?. It took me a while to fully make her understand that though heat can be used in reducing the virulence of some viruses, in certain cases, the Coronavirus is a new virus and there has been very little study showing the effectiveness of heat in killing the virus. Asides the heat myth, there have been several other myths about the Coronavirus that have misled people. However, in this article, we will be discussing the effect of heat on Coronavirus. Effect of Heat on Coronavirus According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the Coronavirus can be transmitted in all areas, including areas with hot and humid weather. A team of scientists from Sun Yat-sen University in China carried out a research on the laboratory-grown copy of the coronavirus. They concluded that ?In cold environments, there is longer virus survival than warm ones?. However, this research is yet to be reviewed. Benjamin Cowling, head of the Epidemiology and Biostatistics Division at the School of Public Health, Hong Kong University said, higher temperatures are unlikely to fully stop the continued spread of the virus. ?I don?t think we can count on it stopping in the summer. It may slow down, but it won?t be stopped". Dr. Qasim Bukhari, a computational scientist at M.I.T. said, ?Wherever the temperatures were colder, the number of the cases started increasing quickly. You see this in Europe, even though the health care there is among the world?s best.? Do Your Part However, we shouldn?t use this as an avenue to practice complacency as the result could be disastrous. ?We still need to take strong precautions,? Dr. Bukhari said. ?Warmer temperatures may make this virus less effective, but the less effective transmission does not mean that there is no transmission.? Warmer temperatures MIGHT make it harder for the Coronavirus to survive in the air or on surfaces for long periods of time, but it could still be contagious for hours, if not days. Even seasonal viruses like influenza and the viruses that cause the common cold don?t completely disappear during hot seasons. They are still present at low levels in many people?s bodies and in other parts of the world, biding their time until there are conditions suitable for the viruses to spread again. It will take a little while before health officials and researchers will have a clearer picture of how the weather pattern or application of heat affects the virulence of the Coronavirus. This is why we need to follow the hygienic tips and stay safe in order to contain the virus. As the effect of heat on Coronavirus has not been fully established, do your part in preventing the spread of Coronavirus in Nigeria.

Does The Corona Virus Kill?

by Mosimileoluwa Alabi/23 March 2020 Last updated on ?Does The Corona Virus Kill?? This has been the major question asked by a lot of Nigerians. There has been so much panic and fear parading the whole country. There have also been various degrees of myth surrounding COVID-19 transmission, treatment, and symptoms. Click here to read on the daily progressive symptoms of Corona Virus The advent of coronavirus in Nigeria, particularly Lagos alongside the rising death tolls in Italy has caused people to ask, ?If I get the virus, will I die?? The simple answer to that Question is No if you have a strong immune system and take the necessary measures on time. You will definitely experience the various symptoms the virus gives but there are very high chances of you recovering, although some might get hospitalized. However, people with suppressed immune systems and underlying medical conditions are at a higher risk of becoming severely ill and in some cases lose their lives if they contract the virus. This does not necessarily mean they will die. It just means that on a scale of 1-100%, about 15% are at the risk of becoming severely ill with the virus. Underlying Medical Conditions That Can Increase Your Risk of Becoming Severely Ill With The Virus Heart Diseases with complications.Chronic Lung cancer.Moderate to severe asthma.Diabetes.Liver Disease.Renal Failure. People who are immunocompromised from cancer treatment, as well as people of any age with severe obesity, are also at risk. What WHO Says About Corona Virus In a statement made on the 20th March, 2020, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyeus, the Director-General of WHO, says ?Young People are not invincible from COVID19. The virus could put you in a hospital for weeks, or even kill you?. This is a wake-up call to young people that the fact that you are not at a greater risk of dying from the virus does not mean it will not kill you if you are reckless with your health. Why Are Older People At Greater Risk? As we age, our immune system weakens. This makes us highly prone to infections of all types. There is also a higher chance of a phenomenon called cytokine storm occurring. This is a situation where the immune system in older people gears up, overreacts and produces too many chemicals to fight off an infection. Therefore, leading to a severe inflammatory reaction that can result in significant damage to the body. How Can I Reduce My Risk Of Contracting Corona Virus? If you fall into the vulnerable group, be vigilant with hygiene. Click this link on tips on how to prevent getting the virus. This does not only apply to people who fall in the vulnerable group but people of all ages. There is still so much we are learning about this new virus. But what we know is that it has been declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. Which is why we must join hands to spread the word, not the virus and fear. You should also practice social distancing. Stay safe.
