A visitor’s visa is required for tourist visits to Tonga. A visa is required even for persons intending to the Vava'u Islands—a well-visited Island group in Tonga. For visitors traveling by sea, the master of the yacht will need to submit a one-way yacht letter/clearance prior to their arrival. The immigration authorities must be satisfied that the visitor has adequate funds for the visit before entry is granted. Relevant health certificates may also be required. Tourist permits specifically prohibit working in Tonga. Foreigners intending to do some business while in the country will need a different kind of visa. Officially, you must get a work permit from the immigration office. This is usually complex and takes time. The following requirements are needed to process a work permit: A specific offer of employment Filled and signed application with the immigration office Police report from your home country Evidence of skills and qualifications Details of your references Visa extensions are possible. To extend your visa, you have to contact the Immigration Department office in Neiafu situated at Tonga Development Bank building 1st floor, or call them on (676) 71142 or (676) 71149. Arrive the airport on time. Airlines advise minimum check-in times of 2 hours before international departures. Late check-in can result in being denied boarding.

Nigerians traveling to Tonga for business must first secure a business visa. Unlike other Non-Tourist Visas, the Tonga business visa is issued for at least a month up to 1 year— for whole five years at a time. You will need to provide an invitation letter from the Tongan company you will be visiting. This letter will also contain their detailed address, accompanied with the date and actual purpose of your trip. If the intention is to attend a meeting or seminar, confirmation/invitation from the conference organizer/institution is required. If you are employed, you will have to present a certificate from your employer stating or allowing your business travel. Proof of sufficient funds to cover the costs of stay (e.g. bank statement for 2 recent months) is required. Self-employed people may need to submit proof of business registration. You cannot be gainfully employed while you are in the country with this visa. It must be made clear whether your trip will be sponsored by the employer or the local company. Proof of payment of visa application fee should be submitted . In summary, these are what you’ll be needing for your Tonga business visa application: Original, signed passport valid for 6 months beyond the stay in Tonga, with at least one blank passport page available for a Tonga visa stamp. One properly completed Tonga visa application form per applicant, including the signed declaration page. Two recent 2 x 2 passport type photographs, in color, front view and with a plain/white background. OR - you can upload a photo when you place your order online, instead of providing physical passport photos. Two character references from two individuals who have known the applicant for a significant period of time (referee's full contact details must be provided and will be verified by the visa officer). Official invitation from the Ministry of Labour, Commerce & Industries (MLCI). Computer generated flight itinerary from the airline or travel agency or copy of airline tickets. A National Police Clearance issued in the past 3 months. A medical report (in accordance with prescribed Tonga Health Form) issued within past 6 months by a medical practitioner approved by Tonga immigration.
