How to Get an International Passport in Nigeria

A passport is a travel document issued by the government of a particular country to its citizens in order to verify the identity and nationality of the holder for the purpose of international travel.

International passports are small booklets that contain the holder's name, place of birth, date of birth, the date of issue, date of expiry, passport number, photo and signature. There are different types of passports depending on the status of the passport holder in their home country.

Types of International Passports

Ordinary Passport

The ordinary passport is also known as a regular passport or tourist passport. This is the type of passport that is issued frequently to citizens of a country and allows for international travel. This passport is usually valid for 10 years.

Collective Passport

A collective passport is issued to a group, such as school children or tour groups travelling abroad together.

ePassport

An epassport- also called electronic passport is a regular passport booklet that contains an electronic chip in the cover. This electronic chip contains the passport holder's information and also provides an extra layer of security against passport fraud.

Official passport

An official passport is a type of passport that is issued to government employees. This passport allows officials in the destination country know that the holder is entering the country on official business or representing their country in an official capacity.

Emergency passport

An emergency passport- also known as a temporary passport, is issued when you lost your passport or had it stolen and you don?t have time to apply for a new one.

Documents Needed to Apply for the International Passport

Documents needed to apply for an International Passport in Nigeria are:

For adults (18 years and above)

• Citizens by birth should provide their National ID card or a letter of identification.
• Citizens by naturalization/registration must provide their Certificate of Naturalization/Registration.
• A complete the special form design for the international passport.
• Two standard passport-sized photographs validated by the guarantor.
• A copy of the guarantor's ePassport issued in Nigeria
• A guarantor's form filled in and also signed by Oaths? Commissioner.
• Married applications should provide their official status certificate.
• Age Declaration or Certificate of birth.
• Proof of payment.

For children (below 18 years)

• A standard passport-sized photograph signed by one or both parents.
• A special application form that contains all the required information.
• The proof of a child parents being the citizens of Nigeria.
• A birth certificate.
• Proof of payment.
• Letter of consent.
• Court Order document (if the parents are unavailable).

How to Apply for an International Passport

To apply online:

• Visit the Nigerian Immigration Services portal.
• Select the passport type.
• Select processing country.
• Complete application form.
• Upload scanned copies of required documents.
• Select preferred payment method (payment can be made with Visa cards).
• Once payment is completed, click ?Submit?.
• You will be issued an Application ID and Reference number.
• Print out Guarantor?s form and have it certified.
• Submit completed application form with additional required documents in person at your selected passport office.
