How People Become Kings In Nigeria

While Nigeria is nothing like a colony or an empire currently, there are still traditional kings and Obas in various parts of the country. These kings and their offices have survived as a testament to the various cultures and governments that held sway in the various regions before they were merged as a nation.

Although Obas and kings no longer wield as much political power as their ancestors did many, many years ago, they still retain the utmost regard and following of their people. You really have to read through history books to appreciate the valour of the thrones these kings seat on.

Man, being an Oba was uber-cool.

Well, it is still kind of awesome being a king today. But, unlike public offices today, not everyone goes to sleep at night thinking they would have even a slim shot at being crowned Oba someday if they wanted it.

No one casts a vote to make you king, sir. Don't even campaign. This is not the elections.

Well, since you're asking, here's how people become kings in Nigeria:

1. Be the Son of a King

In the Benin Kingdom, only the first son of an Oba may ascend the throne after his father passes on. The same principle works for the Yorubas for the Ooni of Ife the various Obas across the kingdom. In recent times though, internal lobbying and elections within "chosen" families plays a role in who becomes crowned as Ooni and Oba. Only the Benin Kingdom has maintained the Father to First son order.

Nowadays, the president of the country and or governor still has to do a vetting after a candidate is brought out to be crowned. Yeah, it is that big of a deal.

2. See Number 1

Sorry, there really is no way around this. You either have to be a son of a king or, in some cultures, you're of the same blood line as the chosen families from which a king might emerge.

Kings are special like that.
