MOVING FROM HEATHROW AIRPORT TO CITY
Heathrow is well connected and has various forms of transportation. The Airport has fast and direct links to central London, making it easy for visitors to find their way around.
There are a number of options available for visitors moving from Heathrow airport to places in the city. The Choice of connections to and from Heathrow include Heathrow Express trains, the Underground (Tube), Local & national bus and coach services, licensed car & driver services. (Limo, Chauffeur, Airport Transfers, Minicabs and London Taxis). The airport car services have to be pre-booked.
EXPRESS TRAIN / UNDERGROUND /THE PICCADILLY LINE
The Underground is the cheapest and one of the easiest way of reaching central London.
The major cons of the Piccadilly line are that many of them have lots of stairs, and/or escalators and are not easy to navigate if visitors have weighty luggage. Trains can also be very crowded at peak times, generally not a problem when boarding at Heathrow, but less pleasant upon reaching central London. Visitors must also that the Piccadilly line, from Heathrow, is 110 years old, and lacks proper air-conditioning. This could be an issue mid-summer.
At many central London stations, step-free access is not an option.
HEATHROW EXPRESS (OVERGROUND TO PADDINGTON)
The most used means of getting to central London is the?Heathrow Express.
The main advantage of the Heathrow Express is that the journey time is only 15 minutes to Paddington from terminals 2 and 3, 23 minutes from terminal 4 and 21 minutes from terminal 5. Trains run every 15 minutes, which is slightly less frequent than the Piccadilly line. In addition, the Heathrow Express is air conditioned with plenty of baggage space, on-board TV, free Wi-Fi and better suited for travel from the airport than the Piccadilly Line.
One major disadvantage, apart from the fact that it is quite expensive, is that the terminus is?
Paddington station, in West London. This means that for most visitors to London, from Paddington station, they will need further transport, quite possibly on the Underground, to reach their final destination. This travel will of course carry further costs.? Visitors whose final destination is not near Paddington, should consider the time and cost implications before choosing Heathrow Express. The average cost of fare is ?18 online, or ?19.
HEATHROW "CONNECT" (OVERGROUND TO PADDINGTON)
The 'Connect' train, runs over the same Heathrow ? Paddington route, as the Heathrow Express. It has lower costs, lesser frequencies, but longer journey times because the train stops at suburban stations on route.
The fare to Paddington is ?9.10, still more than double the cost of the Underground for the same journey. The train does not serve Terminals 4 or 5. Visitors must first catch the Heathrow Express to the main station serving Terminals 2 & 3). The still high cost of this train, makes it a poor option for most visitors.
However if your immediate destination is Paddington or if you are staying in certain areas of outer west London, it can be a viable transportation choice. Journey time to Paddington is 27 minutes.
HEATHROW BY ROAD: TAXIS, PRIVATE HIRE (MINICABS) AND COACHES
Visitors who desire a more personal transport option could choose from the option of Taxis, mini cabs or coaches. London Licensed Taxis can be booked at the Heathrow Taxi Rank Kiosk as required, a Licensed Private Hire Vehicle can be booked from the Airport Information Desk in arrivals, or in advance online.
TAXIS.
Taxis booked from outside Heathrow can work out to be expensive. Fares to central London are subject to metering, but the meter runs up at a high rate, and you should not be surprised by a ?80-?100 fare. Taxi drivers are very knowledgeable about London sites though, having obtained the famous knowledge test, which can make an interesting ride. This said, financially it is often better, if you want to travel by taxi, to book a private hire/minicab in advance online. All Licensed London Taxis have to accept credit or debit cards.
PRE-BOOKED LICENSED?PRIVATE CAR (& DRIVER) HIRE / AIRPORT TRANSFER SERVICE / MINICAB
Pre-booked Licensed minicabs are often cheaper than taxis and very comfortable for longer journeys. Pre-booking by card is the easiest way to book, and it saves visitors the stress of having to worry about finding currency at the airport. Most professional airport services will meet and greet you inside the airport arrivals terminal, and take you directly to your destination. The cost of these cabs vary according to the payment made3. Average fare for a decent (executive) airport transfer to central London ride should be around ?55-?65 per vehicle (up to 4 passengers). There are cheaper services, and chauffeur services charge more.?Beware of touts offering vehicles in the terminals.
NATIONAL EXPRESS COACHES
National Express run from the central bus station (close to Terminals 2 and 3; from 4 and 5 transfer by free bus or train) to Victoria coach station in central London. A relatively unpopular choice, because the coaches are more expensive than the underground, they are subject to traffic, and unlike a taxi/minicab, will not take you to your final destination. However they are still a reasonable choice if visitor?s final destination is close to Victoria and the visitor landing at Terminal 2 or 3. Frequencies vary throughout the day from around every 15 minutes to hourly. Best avoided during morning rush hour, but by late evening journey times are down to only around 40 minutes (from over an hour in the morning). Fares are ?6 single.
