Calabar is a place that offers so much; from colourful street carnivals to family vacations at Tinaapa and the beautiful landscape scenery and also traditional foods. Calabar is well known for their tasty traditional foods, enough to make you salivate just by looking at it, then imagine the taste. Here are some of the foods you should try in Calabar.
EDIKANG IKONG
Edikang ikong is calabar’s most popular and multicultural dish. Prepared with vegetable pumpkin leaves, water leaf, meat, fish, periwinkle, palm oil, cray fish and other ingredients. This mouthwatering can be eaten with fufu, garri or pounded yam.
BANGA SOUP
Another popular dish in Calabar, made from palm fruits. Banga soup is also known as ofe akwu by the Igbos who normally eat rice with it. Banga soup is usually served with starch, garri and pounded yam in Calabar.
ABAK
Abak Atama is prepared with periwinkles, atama leaves and palm fruits unlike Banga soup, the atama leaves are used to prepare the soup which gives it a unique taste and aroma.
EKPANG NKWUKWO
The mouthwatering meal is one of traditional meals of the Efiks. Ekpang nkwukwo is made with cocoyam and wateryam mixed with periwrinkles and is enjoyed by many as it is served at special occasions.
AFANG
Another popular delicacy in calabar which has also been adopted by other tribes. This tasty soup is prepared with a large amount of water leaves and assorted meat. Fufu and garri can be eaten with the soup but with rice if you aren’t a swallow fan.
