Breathtaking Nigerian Festivals

If you have ever attended any festival in Nigeria, you would discover something about the celebrants – excitement and passion. These two charismas are what fuel the festivals to stand out in their preparations and celebrations. You cannot escape the thrill and fun that come with any of the festivals held in the country. We have listed some of the breathtaking festivals you would probably love to experience.

Leboku New Yam Festival

New Yam Festival has become a vital part of the people in different parts of the country. There is no part of the country where New Yam Festival is celebrated and doesn’t come with pomp and affluence. Located in Yakurr, Cross River State, Leboku’s New Yam Festibal takes three weeks. In these three weeks, engaged maidens are paraded, the ancestors and gods are appeased, and there is intense farming by the natives during this event.

Argungu Fishing Festival

The Argungun Fishing Festival is a colorful festival held in Argungu in Kebbi State. This is an extreme water sport that is carried out for four days where thousands of fishermen compete for the biggest catch in the Malan Fada River. The winner goes home richer and becomes influential. Indeed, it is a breathtaking festival. You have never experienced something like this before.

Osun festival

This festival is held at the end of the raining season at the Oshogbo Sacred Forest. This is a seven day celebration where the goddess, Oshun is reversed and appeased by thousands of worshipers from different parts of the world. The deity priests conduct the ritual rites. You are going to see a lot of barren women who are come here hoping to get pregnant.

Ivbamen Festival

Ivbamen festival is held at Ozalla, Enugu State. This festival involves only boys who are ready to be initiated into the manhood. It does not come easily for these boys who will pass through different rituals and spiritual rites. When they are successful, they become fully initiated as men.

Olojo festival

The Olojo Festival takes place in Ife by the Ooni. He is seen leaving humans to communicate with his ancestors and gods before the Olojo festival is held. This apparently helps push evil forces away from the palace. He would then take his people in a procession to the Okemogun’s shrine, where the Ooni will renew his oath as the people’s Ooni at the foot of Oketage hill.
