Kanoma Hill

About Kanoma Hills
Kanoma Hill is approximately 479 metres or 1,571 feet high. It is is located in Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State. In battle, the hill provided protection to the Kanoma people who lived right on top of the hill. It was a major advantage as it meant the enemy forces had to charge uphill to attack them, while they could easily hide and lay in wait. Kanoma hill is about 34km away from Gusau.
History of Kanoma Hills
The Kanoma people were 19th century hunters who settled on top of Kanoma hill. Umaru Nagwamatse – grandson of Usman Dan Fodio, and founder of Kontagora and Gwamatsawa Dynasty – attempted and failed to conquer Kanoma. Such was the protection that Kanoma hill offered and how the Kanoma people used it to their advantage in battle.
