Cost Of Living in New York City

Accommodation Costs are an integral part of the costs of living in New York City. The city, and in particular Manhattan, is famous for its in part exorbitant prices for property and rentals. Potential buyers will, for instance, be hard pressed to find a nice apartment in Manhattan for less than 1.5 million dollars (the average price is 1.87m USD). Similarly, rents can be quite high, depending on which part of the city your apartment is situated in and whether it includes additional services like the services of a doorman, which is very common in Manhattan. They typically cost up to an additional 1000 dollars a month compared to non-serviced units. Prices not only vary depending on location, but also on services and facilities included, their size and condition, and so on. So make sure to pick an area that suits both your needs and your budget, shop around and, when you feel that you have found your future home, be quick to snap it up before somebody else does. When it comes to utilities, prices of heat and hot water are always already a part of the rental bills. However, this is not the case for the rest of the utility charges, which should not be ignored when calculating the cost of living in New York. According to labour legislations of the City of New York, charges on utility in the grander New York metropolis are at an average of around 0.17 USD per KWH for electricity. The real prices of utility depend on the provider, conditions stated in the contract, and the level at which these utilities are expended. It is advised that travellers check thoroughly for service providers and find suitable ones for their budget range. When calculating their cost of living in New York, also note that expenditures for electricity tend to increase during the summer. Groceries, as one might expect after hearing that the cost of living in New York is the highest in all of the US, can quickly get expensive as well. In many areas and in Manhattan in particular, the sheer quantity of different, high-quality food and goods on offer may cause travellers to spend much more for simple, everyday items than they would have expected or budgeted. It is therefore ideal that if travellers are trying to keep their cost of living in New York simple, they should make sure to compare prices and maybe even plan the occasional big shopping trip to one of the farther away, less expensive areas of the city.
