Tamale Airport

Tamale Airport (IATA: TML; ICAO: DGLE) is the airport serving Tamale, a city in the Northern Region of Ghana. The airport was established as an advanced operational base for World War II troops. The landing strip, now housing the International Airport is located at Nyohene, 2 miles West of Tamale. Tamale Airport has an aerodrome control tower, Rescue and Fire Fighting Service (RFSS), and Air Traffic Control Offices. During the regime of Dr Nkrumah, Tamale Airport was manned by the Airforce. The airport gained international status in 2008 when it was upgraded to the status of an International airport, with all the necessary facilities. The facilities at the newly upgraded Tamale Airport include the construction of a runway, taxiways and aprons, a terminal, modified fire service building, rehabilitation of the tower building, a car park and a VVIP lodge. Offices have also been built at the Tamale International Airport for Customs, Excise and Preventive Services and the Immigration Services. Tamale International Airport received international flights from South Africa, Tunisia and Angola during the CAN 2008 African Cup?of Nations, hosted by Ghana. The airport in August 2016 uplifted Hajj pilgrims directly to Prince MohammBinbin Abdulaziz Airport in Minna. Significant places of interest in Tamale include National Cultural Centre, Tamale Sports Stadium, the Gulpke Na Palace, Larabanga Mosque, Mole National Park, Nalerigu Defence Wall, Sirigu pottery and art village, Sacred crocodile ponds, Nania slave camp and the Paga Pia's Palace. Tamale hosts several cultural festivals and events such as the Jintigi Fire Festival, Damba Festival, Kpini Chugu?Festival, and Gobandawu (Yam) Festival.
