It is also the capital of the Greater Accra Region and of the Accra Metropolis District. Accra is furthermore the anchor of a larger metropolitan area, the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area (GAMA), which is inhabited by about 4 million people and is the thirteenth-largest metropolitan area in Africa.   Accra functions as the Greater Accra Region's financial and organizational center. It is furthermore a region of a wide range of nightclubs, restaurants and hotels. Since the early 1990s, a number of new buildings have been built, including the multi-story French-owned Novotel hotel. The city's National Theatre was built with Chinese assistance. In 2010, the Globalization and World Cities Research Network think tank designated Accra a Gamma-minus-level world city, indicating a growing level of international influence.   The central business district of Accra contains the city's main banks and department stores, as well as an area known as the Ministries, where Ghana's government administration is concentrated. Economic activities in Accra include the financial and commercial sectors, fishing and the manufacture of processed food, lumber, plywood, textiles, clothing and chemicals. Tourism is becoming a thriving source of business for those in arts and crafts, history cites and local travel and tour agents. The Oxford Street in the district of Osu has grown to become the hub of business and night life in Accra. The modern city is centered on the original British, Danish, and Dutch forts and their surrounding communities: Jamestown near the British James Fort, Osu near the Danish fort of Christiansborg (now Osu Castle), and Ussherstown near the Dutch Ussher fort.   Tourist attractions include the National Museum of Ghana, the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Archives of Ghana and Ghana's central library, the National Theatre, the Accra Centre for National Culture, the Jamestown lighthouse, and the Ohene Djan Stadium.   The city is also a transportation hub, home to the Kotoka International Airport, and railway links to Tema, Sekondi-Takoradi and Kumasi. Accra has become a location for national and international business conferences, such as the BarCamp Ghana series, organized by GhanaThink Foundation   Accra is serviced by Kotoka International Airport, which has both civil and military uses. Located 6 miles (9.7 kilometers) from downtown Accra, the airport handles all of the city's scheduled passenger services. There are plans to build a second airport to relieve the aviation pressure on the Kotoka International Airport. This new airport will be located at Prampram in Accra and will be constructed by China Airport Civil Construction.   A number of airlines operate their flights from Accra, Ghana.   Transport Options for Moving Around the City of Accra The government owned bus company (State Transport Corporation or STC) is an economical and reliable transportation option in Ghana.? STC offers scheduled bus service that extends throughout Ghana?s from major cities to towns and several small villages.?? The service is fairly reliable though the timetable appears to be merely a suggestion.? Depending on the route, there may be several different "grades" of quality, so be sure that if your trip is of a longer duration, you request the "luxury" bus, which should have air conditioning, though no toilet.? Traveling by STC is probably the safest way of traveling in the country. The fares are relatively cheap: the luxury bus trip from Accra to Kumasi? is about 55,000 cedis/ U$6.00 (an almost four hour ride).? You should buy the tickets in advance (day before would be best) so that you are given an assigned seat.?? Once aboard, you can negotiate with fellow passengers if you need to change seats.? This link to STC will give you an idea of the fares, though provides no schedule unfortunately.   There are very few "rest stops" within Ghana, a concept relatively new to Ghanaian travelers.? However, one of the newest, the Linda Dorr Rest Stop is enroute to Cape Coast and Kumasi, and the bus will stop there for a 10-minute break. ?Ghanaians have learned to "chop" fast, and can take their light soup, fish and fufu in that amount of time.? Foreigners will no doubt want to consider kebabs or sausage, or meat pies; there is also a place to buy juice, water, biscuits, etc.? Avail yourself of the toilet facilities here, they are clean and worth the cost of 1,000 cedis (less than a dime).? On the return trip, the rest stop is entirely different.? It is an older stop near the base of the Kwahu Mountains, the toilets are not nice... bring your own toilet paper or tissue and try to be first off the bus to queue here, otherwise the wait is too long.   Some privately owned bus companies and tour operators have buses for charter or hire, as well.   There are also privately owned minibuses, known in the local parlance as tro tros,[ many are poorly maintained]? The locals make use of them because they are amazingly cheap and readily available. Once understood , they are? very useable, cheap and fun !   You can take taxis, prices are reasonable. Just be aware of the different types of taxis as each have different fares. Remember to bargain the fare.?? Whatever the driver quotes you, offer a third of that and work your way to an agreement.Or check with a local the normal fare for the route.Just remember to have change and low denomination notes.   If you decide to hire a car, rental cars are available at the bigger hotels and at the airport.? Be sure you have a valid driver's license, and if needed, an international driver's license (which is necessary only if your personal license is NOT written in English).? An important point to discuss here is the role of the police as regards motorists.? Permanent police barriers are scattered throughout Ghana, in Nungua, Weija, Adenta, Dawhenya to name just a few; there are also impromptu roadblocks that are set up, most notably on the Aflao and Ho Roads, and the Beach Road in Tema.? A police officer can require you to stop for any reason, and merely to see your travel documents.? The car you are driving must have current registration and insurance stickers displayed on the windshield, and your car should have a fire extinguisher and a reflector triangle; naturally, you should also have available your driver's license.? Failure to produce these things at a checkpoint stop could result in the seizure of your license; you will be provided with an extract from the officer and given a date to go to the police station to retrieve it.? This is the legal way things should be done, if the law is broken.? Unfortunately, corruption within the police division tends to be widespread, and more than likely, you will be encouraged to settle the problem "differently."? Even if you have done nothing wrong, you may still be "asked" for a little something, one officer recently suggesting it was a "management cost."?? Actual court imposed fines for traffic violations range from 3 million to 6 million cedis (about $330 to $660).? This amount is so out of the reach of the typical Ghanaian that it is, unfortunately, not improbable that some "deal" will be negotiated between the police and the driver.? Even where the driver is in the right, and no violation occurred... well, it's the police officer's word against the driver.? Police officer wins almost every time [This is rather severe, talk quietly, sort it with max 5 Ghc - taxi drivers pay 1 or 2 Ghc bribe].Another often more sensible option is to find a personable taxi driver and hire by the day c. 100 Ghc.   Another major problem with driving yourself around is the amount of traffic (too many cars for not enough roadway), winding and unnamed streets, open gutters, huge pot holes, inaccuracy of local maps, and the inability for a pedestrian to clearly offer directions. A smart method of getting around, especially if you plan to stay for some months and in one place, is to buy a motorbike. Not only are you going to save some money but also you are going to avoid traffic problems A 250-500cc motor bike costs between U$ 400 and U$ 900. You'll find no problems reselling it at a good price.   Tourist Attractions in Accra Makola Market Jamestown The National Theatre The Independence Square Accra Kwame Nkrumah Maudoleum and Memorial Park Labadi Beach Cape Coast Castle National Museum of Ghana Accra Mall Bojo Beach Aburi Botanical Gardens Marina Mall   FAQS About Flights from Lagos to Accra ?
