STAYING IN?ATLANTA

If you're staying in Atlanta and want to take advantage of MARTA, the three parts of town you should consider are Downtown, Midtown, Decatur and Buckhead.

Downtown

Downtown Atlanta has primarily been a business centre. Durig big events, like the Georgia Aquarium, CNN Center, World of Coke, College Football Hall of Fame, Imagine It! Children's Museum, Centennial Olympic Park, NCAA tournament, Georgia Dome, and Phillips Arena, the Downtown the streets are lively. ?It is a very popular area among tourists and students. Downtown has a lot of up and coming bars and restaurants like a Hard Rock Cafe.

Midtown

Midtown is a great blend of businesses, restaurants, shops, and residences. It is very pedestrian and great for strolling. It is common to see people walking to and from restaurants, eating and drinking at sidewalk cafes, walking dogs, jogging, etc. until late at night. Although Midtown is relatively newer that Downtown and has several skyscrapers, Midtown has more of a neighbourhood feel. It has far more bar and restaurants than Downtown, the majority of which are local and unique as opposed to big chains. It is also a great place for shopping and experiencing the art and music culture. From Midtown, you can walk to the High Museum, Piedmont Park, Fox Theatre, Margaret Mitchell House, Atlanta Botanical Gardens. There are some areas to avoid, but they're generally not areas where tourists would find themselves anyway. any large city caution when walking at night but that doesn't deter me from walking around whenever.

Buckhead

Buckhead is about a 20-30 minute MARTA ride from Downtown. This part of the city is a place for big things; upscale malls, upscale hotels and upscale restaurants like Phipps Plaza, Lenox Square Mal. Fewer people walk in this area, ?preferring instead to drive from place to place, because of the way the neighbourhood is spread out. It would be wise to rent a car if you choose to stay here. The food scene in Buckhead is amazing, it is also an area where you will find the Governor's mansion, Legoland Discovery Center and the Atlanta History Center. The Buckhead triangle skyline is marked by high-rise condos, apartments and office buildings. If you're going to Atlanta to shop, you will love Buckhead.

Decatur

Decatur is a small town just to the east of Atlanta and is closer to the downtown and midtown area than a lot of suburbs that are within the city. The Decatur Square is a charming area with many unique restaurants, bars and boutiques, and the area has been described as a blend between Mayberry and Berkeley. Decatur's restaurants frequently appear on local, regional, and national "best of" lists. There is a MARTA station in the Decatur Square, so it has easy access to Atlanta.

  • Foreign exchange services are available outside the airport at ATMs, banks and forex firms like CXI , Sterling Currency Group, etc.
  • Certain?areas have a crowd of homeless people and beggars seen around the boardwalk. Don't worry, they aren?t aggressive and if you just say ?no? and walk away, they won?t bother you.
  • Keep careful watch of your belongings. Pickpockets are rampant so be aware of your belongings and surroundings.
  • Visitors are advised to stay away from Southern Atlanta, including Grant Park, the Bluff, and the I-20. These are the hubs of dangerous and illegal activity in Atlanta, and they are far from the tourist centres with the most appealing attractions. In these parts of Atlanta, you?re more likely to be hassled by strangers, and the conversation may turn dangerous.
  • East Atlanta is another unsavoury area. If you have to pass through these areas, avoid stopping there for whatever reason.
  • Northeast of the city centre is Kirkwood, the area where you?re more likely to see gang activity. The city is divided into parcels, or zones, that gang members consider to be their territory. Zones three and four, in particular, should be avoided.
