Etisalat, formally called Emirates Telecommunication Group Company (PJSC), was founded in 1976 as a joint-stock company. In 1983, the ownership changed, 60% share in the company was held by the United Arab Emirates government while the remaining 40% were publicly traded.

In October 2016, Etisalat launched its 4G LTE network which currently covers some part of Lagos and Abuja. In 2017, Etisalat withdrew from the market after it debt was not repaid and was later renamed 9mobile ?the network?s new brand name.
