Social Distancing: Can Nigerians Survive It?

by Rebecca/March 26 10:48 AM Last updated on Social distancing, or?physical distancing,?is a set of?infection control?actions intended to stop or slow down the spread of a?contagious disease. The objective of social distancing is to reduce the probability of contact between persons carrying an infection, and others who are not infected, so as to minimize?disease transmission, morbidity and ultimately?mortality. If you are wondering if coronavirus is airborne then you should see this. Staying away from others as much as possible is practicing social distancing. For now, the only places you should even consider visiting should be very few and they should be visited only when necessary. The markets for foodstuff and provisions, pharmacies, and hospitals. If you visit any of these places, maintain at least 1 metre (3 feet) distance between yourself and the next person, as recommended by WHO. Avoiding large gatherings as much as possible. This is not the time to host or attend big parties and ceremonies. Lagos State, for instance, has banned all gatherings of over 50 people within the state, and other states are following suit. Staying at home. There is no other way to put this. For some this may prove a challenge, however the less people are out on the streets and in contact with others, the faster we can stop coronavirus in Nigeria. An increase in COVID-19 infections in Nigeria will overwhelm our health system, and it is up to each and every one of us to stop this from happening. The only way Nigerians will fully be committed to social distancing is if it is made into a law that should not be broken like Lagos state is doing. Anyone who then breaks this law by going too close to someone or getting into their personal space should have a price to pay for it. As hard and as unbelievable as it might sound, as long as social distancing is set as law and measures are put in place to make that easy on everyone, then people will find themselves settling into it. It recently made the news of a pharmacy in Ibadan that had to draw boxes on the ground for people to stand in before gaining access to the store. It made the entire process orderly and everyone practiced social distancing seamlessly. To the part where you wonder if Nigerians can survive it, it will no longer be a condition of Nigerians surviving it when they know the harm that they will be putting themselves in by not practicing social distancing. The only people we can say will find it a bit difficult are those who provide daily services in public places and who depend on the little stipends they make daily to survive. Hawkers, for instance, will have to get really close to their customers in order to provide their service. The same goes for food sellers, barbers, hairdressers and practically every other Nigerians who go from a place to the other with the public transport system. The only solution to this is a total lockdown on movement and outings at large. And a possible solution for survival is provided for those who make daily stipends on the street. As long as this is in place, then it makes obeying the social distancing rule easier since everyone has the means to survive. Nigerians can and will survive social distancing as long as they become more aware of the fact that that they have a better chance of staying alive based on their level of obedience to the social distancing and proper hygiene rule. It is called ?Social Distancing?, but what this really calls for is ?Physical Distancing?. We can still be social but maintain our physical distance. Instead of having friends and family visit, please take advantage of social media to keep in touch with them. This is an opportunity to reconnect with family members and friends.

Covid-19: Day 1 of the Lagos Shut down

by Nnamdi/March 26 10:26 AM Last updated on On the 24th of March, the Lagos State Government under the leadership of His Excellency Babajide Sanwo-Olu mandated that all markets, public parks, banks, and offices be shut down from the 26th of March, 2020 in order to limit the spread of the coronavirus in Lagos. Babajide Sanwo-Olu addressing Lagosians on coronavirus pandemic in Lagos The information was passed through his official twitter account in a series of tweet . The lockdown is to last 7 days as stated in the tweet and will also require gyms, beauty salons, and parks in private residential estates to shut down for the foreseeable future. Only people exempted from lockdown are sellers of food, medicines, medical equipment, and other essential life-saving product. This announcement saw Lagosians scramble to the market to stock up on everything they can to take them through the lockdown. This resulted in really long queues yesterday at every ATM as people wanted to have money to purchase all they need at the local markets as well as have cash at hand in case of any emergency expense. Today marks the beginning of the statewide lockdown and it will be interesting to see how Lagosians cope with the new directives. If you are at home and bored read about fun things you can do while at home. As you go into self isolation ensure that you have gone through our list of the things you should stock up your home with before going into self-isolation . Also, the State Government has reduced the number of people that can attend public gatherings (churches and mosques) from 50 to 25. While the Government is doing its best to ensure they contain the spread of the virus, it is important that as citizens we do not panic. Read about our article on how to know you DO NOT have coronavirus as well as hygiene tips to ensure you do not get the coronavirus Remember to practice social distancing and stay safe

Coronavirus and Flu: The similarities and differences

by Stephen Akadiri/March 26 07:12 AM Last updated on Human coronaviruses are not as new as they seem. As a matter of fact, they are common throughout the world. According to the Centre for Disease Control (CDC), The first case of human coronavirus was first reported in the mid-60s. Ever since then, 7 other different strains of the virus have been identified to infect humans. Below are the listed 7 coronaviruses: 229E (alpha coronavirus) NL63 (alpha coronavirus) OC43 (beta coronavirus) HKU1 (beta coronavirus)MERS-CoV (the beta coronavirus that causes Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, or MERS) SARS-CoV (the beta coronavirus that causes the severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS) SARS-CoV-2 (the novel coronavirus that causes coronavirus disease 2019, or COVID-19) How ever, the most recent coronavirus, COVID-19 is caused by a new virus. It was first identified in Wuhan, China and is associated with mild-to-severe respiratory illness with fever and cough. This virus is highly contagious and spreads easily from person-to-person. You can learn more about the progressive symptoms of coronavirus here. It has been named ?SARS-CoV-2? and the disease it causes has been named ?coronavirus disease 2019? (abbreviated ?COVID-19?). Influenza (or Flu) on the other hand, is a viral disease caused by the influenza virus. It basically infects the respiratory system, thereby affecting the lungs, throat, and nose. Due to the fact that both the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and Influenza (Flu) basically infect the respiratory system, several attempts have been made by medical practitioners to compare the two infectious diseases. Similarities between COVID-19 virus and Flu Here are the ways in which both viruses are similar: Both the Influenza virus (Flu) and the COVID-19 virus cause respiratory infection, which appears as a wide range of illnesses from asymptomatic or mild to severe diseases and even death. Both viruses are primarily transmitted by contact, droplets, or by contaminated inanimate objects such as clothes, utensils, furniture, beddings, etc. As a result of this, the same precautionary measures, such as hand hygiene and good respiratory etiquette (coughing into a flexed elbow or into a tissue and immediately disposing of the tissue), are important actions that can be taken to prevent infection. Both diseases can lead to pneumonia in severe cases. Differences between COVID-19 and Flu Some of the basic differences between the influenza virus and the novel coronavirus disease are summarized in the table below: Other differences between the influenza virus (Flu) and COVID-19 are: Depending on the locality and quality of healthcare, the global mortality rate of COVID-19 is about 3.4% when compared with the seasonal Flu which is approximately 1%.While there is a vaccine for Flu, Coronavirus, on the other hand, has no vaccine or cure (although there are several laboratory experiments ongoing to develop a vaccine for the new virus). Unlike the COVID-19 virus, children are the major drivers of the influenza virus transmission in the community, while the initial data for COVID-19 virus indicates that children are less affected than adults and that clinical attack rates in the 0-19 age group are very low. Further preliminary data from household transmission studies in China, where the virus was first identified, suggests that children are infected from adults, rather than vice versa. Until a vaccine or cure is made available, there is no better way to prevent the spread of COVID-19 than practicing social distancing and self-isolation, which means non-essential social contact or travel should be strictly avoided. It is very important to maintain good personal and domestic hygiene by washing the hands regularly with soap and water and keeping surfaces and utensils clean.

Potential Economic Impact of Coronavirus in Nigeria

by Mosimileoluwa Alabi/March 25 09:37 PM Last updated on As the Coronavirus is spreading fast across Nigeria and other countries of the world, governments are taking quick measures to curb its spread. They are doing so by shutting down industries and companies to reduce physical contact among people. This, in turn, brings about a reduction in business activity. The International Monetary Fund (IMF), says it expects a global recession this year, at least as bad as the Global Financial Crisis or worse. ?The economic impact is and will be severe, but the faster the virus stops, the quicker and stronger the recovery will be?, said the body. From the look of things, it might take a while for the economies of some countries in the world to experience positive growth. Potential Economic Impact of Coronavirus in Nigeria As there are currently less than 100 confirmed cases in Nigeria, the country might experience positive economic growth after this pandemic ends. If it exceeds what the country can handle, a great darkness is patiently waiting to envelop the country?s economy. This does not sound too good as Nigeria?s economy is still growing. Some states are experiencing complete lockdown in the bid to flatten the curve. As residents of these states can?t go to the cinemas, restaurants and their various places of work, the economic activity of these states will be substantially negatively affected which will, in turn, affect the country. Oil Sector Nigeria majorly depends on crude oil. Countries are trying to focus more on their health care system and aren?t so concerned about production. This, in turn, will drop the demand for crude oil from Nigeria which will definitely take its toll on the country?s economy. On 9 March, oil prices lost about one-third of their value. Nigeria will, however, have to adjust to this global reality as it does not have economic sovereignty. Business Transactions Between Countries This global pandemic has brought about a disruption in the free flow of business transactions between Nigeria and major manufacturing companies. An example is China. Although cargoes are still received from some European countries, there are fears that business operations might not be sustainable as some supply chains have been disrupted. This disruption in the supply chain is taking its toll on raw materials needed for production. What The Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry Is Saying Nigerian manufacturers are beginning to get worried about access to raw materials needed to sustain their operations. ?The global supply chain has been deeply disrupted as China, which is the second-largest economy in the world, is a major supplier?of?inputs?for?manufacturing?companies around?the world, Nigeria inclusive?, said Dr. Muda Yusuf. Dr. Muda Yusuf is the Director-General of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Are Gadgets and Automobile Parts Dealers Safe? Phones, hardware, gadgets and automobile spare parts dealers are not left out of this as they complain that they have not been able to get their goods from China since the advent of Covid-19. Leo Okoye, Secretary, Foreign Trade and Investment Committee, Automobile Spare Parts and Machinery Dealers Association commented on the issue. He said, ?being an international market that we operate in, the outbreak of the virus has affected our business drastically, as foreigners are no more coming in for business?. Furthermore, he said the coronavirus has caused hikes in the prices of automobile parts, as some of the parts have tripled in price because there is no supply,? When asked if there are alternatives, he said, ?I don?t think there will be alternatives, because the Chinese are indoor; they are no more producing?. The Economic impact of Coronavirus in Nigeria does not look good. The earlier the virus is contained, the better for our country.

How you can stay safe if you're travelling during coronavirus pandemic

by Joel/March 25 02:09 PM Last updated on If you?re in any part of Nigeria, it is generally advised that you practice social distancing with the ongoing spread of COVID-19. This means staying at home when you do not need to go out. While most business meetings, conferences, shows and events have been postponed until further notice, going out or travelling might be inevitable for some. And that is understandable. For those people, social distancing means that you should maintain a distance of at least 1 metre (about 3 feet) from the next person when you?re in public. This is to ensure that you do not contract coronavirus (or transmit it unwittingly). If you need to travel and you?re worried about exposing yourself, the following tips can help you stay safe while you are out. Using masks Health professionals have advised that most people do not need masks because,a) it will do next to nothing to prevent you from contracting the virus if you do not wear it properly, andb) a cloth mask and most masks used by the public can still allow air particles through. Those who really need to wear a mask are people who are showing symptoms such as coughing. But really, if you are experiencing any of the symptoms of the coronavirus you shouldn?t be outside. However, if your travel is taking you to an area that has confirmed cases of coronavirus, then wearing a mask might not be a bad idea. Usually, an N95 respirator would be the ideal mask but it might be difficult to obtain at this time. Because health workers need it more to attend to people who actually have the virus and also because it is very difficult to breathe through. Disinfecting your hands This is the most effective way to protect you against getting the virus. This is because COVID-19 is mostly contracted when you come in direct contact with an infected person?s body fluid or when you touch a surface that an infected person has coughed or sneezed on. It is very important that you thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds regularly. In case you find yourself in a place where you cannot use soap and water, it is advisable to carry an alcohol-based hand sanitiser with you. The goal is to make sure that your hands are clean at all times because, really, we tend to touch our face without thinking about it. This way, even when you come in contact with an infected surface, sanitising your hands regularly will likely save you when you absentmindedly touch your face. Wearing gloves You might have seen a lot of people wearing gloves to protect their hands, or you also wear them.?You might want to know that WHO says that wearing rubber gloves while out in public is not effective in preventing infection of COVID-19. And that washing your bare hands offers more protection than wearing gloves.Seriously, wash your hands regularly if you want to stay safe. But if you feel safer wearing gloves, please note that it should not replace proper handwashing. Also, do not to wear the same pair of gloves for an extended period of time because you can still pick up coronavirus even while wearing gloves. And when you touch your face with an infected glove, you can be infected.? So change gloves often, if you choose to wear them, and properly dispose of them. Also, wash your hands after you take off the gloves. Eating in public If you are on a trip you might have to eat out. The World Health Organisation has advised individuals to avoid consuming raw or undercooked animal products. Coronaviruses are susceptible to normal cooking temperatures (70?). So you should eat well-cooked food and may have to watch your consumption of refrigerated or uncooked foods (e.g. sandwiches and salads). This is because while investigations are ongoing to determine the survival time of SARS-CoV-2 (the virus responsible for COVID-19), another strain of coronavirus (MERS-CoV) is known to remain viable at 4? for up to 72 hours. Remember that if you feel unwell, you should stay at home for your safety and that of the general public. And if you are showing any of the symptoms of COVID-19, you should call the NCDC toll-free line to be sure of what to do. Also, if you have no reason to be out, please stay indoors and do these fun things or boost your productivity with these tips.

Coronavirus in Nigeria: 5 Things To Do If You Are Coughing

by Mosimileoluwa Alabi/March 25 12:22 PM Last updated on So you?ve been coughing and you?re beginning to panic because it could be you know what. You are wondering, should I take cough syrups, call a doctor or go to the nearest hospital ASAP? With the spread of the Coronavirus in Nigeria, and the symptoms that trail the virus, it can be hard to know the next step to take and even harder to stay calm. This is why we have curated a list of things to do if you are coughing and think you have the Coronavirus. Stay At Home Till You Are Sure In staying at home, practice self-isolation and sterilize everything around you. Hospitals are already getting stressed and it doesn?t help that patients who probably do not have the virus come running to the hospital. Do not rush to the hospital if you feel a bit under the weather. Rather, self-isolate and monitor the progressive symptoms.  Stay Calm If you have not been potentially exposed to an infected person, stay calm. If you have, still stay calm and monitor the symptoms-fever, headaches, fatigue, and shortness of breath- for 10-14 days in self-isolation. After that, you?d know if you?re to call the hospital or visit it. Then your health care provider can work with NCDC and determine if you need to be evaluated in person or tested. Call A Doctor Instead of Visiting The Hospital or Pharmacy Without An Appointment This is because you are still uncertain about having the virus so it?ll give the doctors the ability to keep you from getting infected or infecting other people. Drink Enough Water and Eat Well We cannot underestimate the importance of a good diet. A good diet helps to boost your immune system. If you fall under the category of vulnerable people, you need to be extra cautious. Call your health care provider if you show any symptoms and eat well. Get Information From The Right Sources It is important to get information about the Coronavirus in Nigeria from reliable sources such as the NCDC and hotels.ng/guides. ?This will help you stay calm and not also spread the wrong information.

Coronavirus: Eat these foods to boost your immune system

by Stephen Akadiri/March 25 09:57 AM Last updated on Immune boosters are supplements, food substances or a range of activities (such as regular exercise, quality sleep or rest) that can help strengthen the natural defense system of an individual against infectious diseases. Despite the rapid spread of the coronavirus pandemic across different countries in the world, statistics from medics have shown that over 90% of people who die from the virus are people with immunocompromised or weakened immune systems. Whether they are old or not, having underlying medical conditions or not, they all had one thing in common - weakened immune system! While the role of a strong immune system at this time can not be ignored, it is important to note that no supplement will cure or prevent the virus. Building a good immune system goes beyond taking dietary supplements. As stated earlier, it also involves activities like regular exercise and rest among other things. With the current coronavirus pandemic, it is equally important to understand that no supplement, diet, or other lifestyle modification other than social distancing and proper hygiene practices can protect one from the COVID-19 virus. However, this article focuses solely on well-researched food supplements that can help strengthen the general body defense mechanism. Here are food supplements that are known for their immune-boosting potential. Spinach Spinach is very rich in vitamin C. It contains folate which repairs body DNA and makes new body cells. It is also packed with numerous antioxidants and beta carotene, which may increase the infection-fighting ability of body immune systems. You can get the best out of it when it is cooked as little as possible so that it retains its nutrients. Citrus fruits Almost all citrus fruits are rich in vitamin C which is believed to increase the production of white blood cells (the disease-fighting cells) in the body. These fruits also contain a large amount of citric acid and other plant compounds that have health benefits, such as anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, which can help boost one's immunity against common cold or Flu. Common examples include oranges, grapefruit, tangerines, lemon, and limes. Pawpaw fruit (Papaya) Pawpaw fruit is very rich in vitamins A, C and E. Research has it that one can find 224 percent of the daily recommended amount of vitamin C in a single pawpaw. They also have a digestive enzyme called papain that has anti-inflammatory effects. Pawpaw fruits have decent amounts of Riboflavin, flavonoids, carotene, and folate, all of which have an overall benefit to one's health. Garlic Garlic is rich in sulfur-containing compounds such as allicin which naturally destroys bacteria and infection. This, in turn, supports your immune system. Research suggests that consuming garlic may help reduce the risk of becoming sick and staying ill. It may also lower blood pressures and slow down the hardening of the arteries. Ginger Ginger contains a high amount of antioxidant which prevents stress and damage to the body's DNA. It may help decrease inflammation, which can help reduce a sore throat and other inflammatory illnesses. Ginger may also help decrease nausea. Green or Black Tea Irrespective of the tea type, whether white, green, or black. Each delivers disease-fighting polyphenols and flavonoids. These antioxidants seek out cell-damaging free radicals and destroy them. Green tea has been found to be a good source of the amino acid L-theanine, a germ-fighting compound in human cells. Broccoli Broccoli is a non-starchy edible green plant rich in potassium and vitamins A, C, and E. It is also a great immune-booster because of its richness in antioxidants. It is readily available in most grocery stores. Almond Almonds are very rich in vitamin E which is important for the maintenance of the immune system, particularly as we get older. Almonds also help lower blood sugar, reduces blood pressure, and lowers blood cholesterol levels. It is also rich in other nutrients like magnesium, fibre, and protein. While these listed fruits or food supplements can strengthen your body defense mechanism because of the nutrient they contain, nothing beats the fight against coronavirus than safety hygienic practices, self-isolation, and social distancing. https://hotels.ng/guides/corona-virus/how-to-protect-yourself-from-the-coronavirus-when-going-to-the-market/ https://hotels.ng/guides/corona-virus/signs-showing-that-you-do-not-have-the-corona-virus/

How to protect yourself from the coronavirus when going to the market

by Stephen Akadiri/March 25 05:49 AM Last updated on As the number of confirmed cases of coronavirus in Nigeria keeps increasing geometrically, some of the people who do not see reasons to observe self-isolation or practice social distancing are now becoming more conscious of the widespread of the coronavirus pandemic. As more companies are going remote, more people are staying indoors. People with compelling reasons to go out do so with an extra sense of carefulness. Regardless of the situation of things, there might still be a need to visit the market to at least buy necessary goods, provision or raw materials for local consumption. But then, how can one remain protected amidst the current coronavirus pandemic when going to the market? Here is the summary of what you can do: Cover your nose and mouth with facial mask Facial masks offer some form of protection as they prevent direct contact with most parts of the face. They block liquid droplets from the nostrils from dispersing to the air and they protect against hand-to-mouth-transmissions. However, they are not 100% efficient because they leave the eyes open and there is evidence that the COVID-19 virus can infect a person through the eyes. So do not be careless because you are wearing a face or nose mask. Make use of protective gloves While the idea of wearing protective gloves sound nice when visiting a public place like markets, medical experts have revealed that it is more adequate to practice frequent handwashing as a precautionary measure against the COVID-19 virus. It is advisable you remove the gloves and dispose them properly when you finally arrive at your destination and wash your hands properly with soap and water or a sanitizer containing at least 70% alcohol. Practice social distancing Yes, it is possible to intentionally leave some gaps between yourself and other people if you have a compulsive reason to visit public places like a market. Avoid places in the market with clusters of people as possible as you can and be aware of people coughing or sneezing around you. There should be at least a gap of about 6 feet or 1 metre between you and the next person. Learn more about self-isolation and social distancing here. If visiting live markets especially in affected areas, It is important to avoid direct, unprotected contact with the live animals and surfaces that have been in contact with them. It is also should be noted that raw or undercooked animal products should not be consumed at this time as they are at the risk of being exposed to viral particles. Extra care should be taken when handling raw meat, milk or animal organs to avoid cross-contamination with uncooked foods. https://hotels.ng/guides/corona-virus/top-hygiene-tips-to-prevent-coronavirus/

Corona virus latest: Italy death toll rises

by Eniola Arowosegbe/March 25 03:12 AM Last updated on Around the globe, the corona virus battle intensifies as some countries are making progress while some are experiencing setbacks. The virus which originated in Wuhan, China in December 2019 has moved across borders and continents spreading rapidly at an alarming rate. Countries around the world are implementing necessary measures to limit the spread of the virus, schools and universities are being shut down, businesses are being closed except those producing essential goods and services and restrictions on movement are being enforced. Some countries such as Italy, Spain, France and Britain have imposed a national lockdown while countries such as Nigeria, Canada, Germany, Ivory Coast, and many others restricted movements in affected states. These measures are beginning to show positive effects as some countries have testified that the surge in the number of new cases continues to decline. Situation updates around the world The corona virus pandemic continues to spread across the globe. Presently, W.H.O has established that at least 177 countries have confirmed cases of corona virus. Current statistics puts the number of confirmed cases in the world is 421, 413 with the death toll being 18,810. The number of recovered cases is 108,388 leaving the number of active cases at 294,215. The epicentre of the pandemic is Europe with the worst hit being Italy recording over 6,500 deaths and Spain coming in second with over 2,500 deaths. Heavy restrictions are being placed globally to limit the spread as health facilities are being overwhelmed amidst fears of an imminent collapse if the numbers keep increasing. What is the cure for corona virus? There is no specific vaccine or antiviral treatment known to prevent or cure corona virus at the moment, although there is ongoing research on vaccines and drugs for treatment of the virus. Various pharmaceuticals and biotech companies have come up with vaccines and drugs in various stages of development with claims that they showed positive infects in treatment but they are yet to undergo clinical trials hence not fit for human use. At the moment, the best way to eliminate corona virus is to practice social distancing, good respiratory hygiene, wash hands regularly with soap and water or use alcohol-based sanitizers with at least 60% alcohol, disinfect and clean frequently touched objects and surfaces. This way, you get to limit the spread of the pandemic and keep yourself safe.

Why you should close down your office and work from home

by Eniola Arowosegbe/March 25 12:36 AM Last updated on There has been increasing debate in different countries around the globe on the enforcement of a lockdown due to the increasing spread of corona virus as the daily increase in number of confirmed cases continues to run in thousands. As it is widely known, the virus spreads through respiratory droplets from coughing and sneezing or when a person comes into contact with a surface contaminated with the virus and then touches the eyes, nose or mouth through which the virus enters the body and becomes active. Corona virus in Italy The worst hit country remains Italy as there are over 63,000 confirmed cases and death tolls are over 6000 surpassing china the origin of the pandemic who had over 4,000 deaths. Corona virus in Italy has forced the country into a total lockdown to limit the spread of the virus. With a population of 60 million. Why Workplaces should shut down According to statistics provided by W.H.O as of 23rd March, it took 67 days for the number of confirmed cases to hit the 100,000 mark, 11 days for it to hit the 200,000 mark and just 4 days to hit the 300,000 mark. Health facilities are getting overwhelmed and death tolls are increasing crossing the 16,000 mark. Hence, the call for stringent measures. Information from the NCDC as at 24th March puts the number of confirmed cases of corona virus in Lagos at 44 amidst public concern over under testing of potential carriers due to limitation of test kits. It is important that all workplaces that aren?t dealing in essential goods close down and encourage remote working as this will help reduce person to person contact and flatten the curve. Currently, there are no vaccines or specific drugs for treatment of corona virus so the best solution is prevention and limitation of the virus. It is therefore imperative organizations protect their employees, clients, customers and the nation at large as the government continues to battle the pandemic A host of firms in Lagos are already working from home. Some of them are: hotels.ng, Union Bank, Access Bank, TechPoint among others. The remote culture is not well established in Nigeria, however, this is the time for organizations to build a remote system to help optimize operations and reduce the economic impact of any impending lockdown.

However, the exact length of time that the virus can live in the air is still being researched. A study in the New England Journal of Medicine by scientists from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Universities of California, LA, Princeton shows that the virus can stay as aerosol in the air for up to 3 hours. Although, not in significant quantities. Health officials have said that the Coronavirus can?become airborne, staying suspended in the air for hours. However, this depends on the heat and humidity. It is important to note that other studies are ongoing, but if this is correct, it might explain why so many people are getting infected quickly. What is WHO Saying? Social Distancing: What Does It Entail?

by Mosimileoluwa Alabi/March 24 07:50 PM Last updated on With the spread of Coronavirus, various terms have been used to explain preventive and precautionary measures. Of those terms, social distancing, self-isolation, and quarantine have been used quite a number of times. However, people do not really know what these terms mean and they use them interchangeably. But what exactly do these terms mean?  Social Distancing is different from Self-Isolation and Quarantine Self-Isolation means staying at home and not putting those around you at risk because you have the symptoms of the Coronavirus or think you do. It is an effective precautionary measure that involves taking simple steps to avoid contact with people because you might put them at risk.  You should self-isolate if you show coronavirus symptoms to monitor the symptoms for a period of 14 days. You should also self-isolate if a member of your family or someone you have come in contact with recently develops symptoms. You should stay away from vulnerable people during this self-isolation period. What is Social Distancing? A Breeding Site For The Coronavirus Social Distancing refers to measures in cutting down on interactions between people with the ultimate goal of flattening the curve- slowing the spread of the Coronavirus. Such measures may include avoiding public transportation, working from home, cutting down on hugs and kisses, shutting down public places like malls, sporting centers, and the likes. While Social Distancing and Self-Isolation are often used interchangeably, Quarantine tends more towards Self-isolation. What Does Social Distancing Entail? In practicing social distancing, you have to stay at home and avoid large gatherings and even if you have to be around a number of people, keep at least 6 feet (about one body length) between you when possible. Remember the movie "5 Feet Apart" and how they had to stay a certain number of feet away from each other to avoid compounding their health issues, we have to practicalize that now. It can be very uncomfortable and boring but click on this link on fun things to do while at home. Why Do I have to Practice Social Distancing? You do not know if the person you are in close proximity to has the Coronavirus in its asymptomatic form, so if the person coughs or sneezes, small droplets come out of the person?s nose or mouth and you can breathe in these droplets. This will increase the spread of the virus. People can spread the coronavirus for at least five days before they show symptoms. Social distancing limits the number of people an infected person comes into contact with ? and eventually spreads the virus to ? before they even realize they have it. ?Without even coughing or sneezing, if you?re standing within 3 to 6 feet to me, you may inhale some of the air I exhale. And of course, if I have the virus, what I?m exhaling microscopically contains the virus?, said Dr. William Schaffner, an infectious disease expert at Vanderbilt University.   How Do I Play My Part? Remember to stay at home, stay calm, stay informed from reliable sources-but not too much as too much fixation on the news can create panic-and finally, stay safe.
