Signs showing that you DO NOT have the Corona Virus

by Stephen Akadiri/March 24 01:04 PM Last updated on Since the outbreak of the novel COVID-19 virus worldwide, there are so many information out there revolving around what the virus is and what is not. The increasing number of cases recorded in Nigeria and how the virus has affected several businesses and daily human interaction has made the matter a great concern. Despite governmental regulations to prevent people from staying in overcrowded places and encouraging social distancing and self-isolation, most people still go about their daily businesses moving from one place to the other, especially via public vehicles. While it is possible to have contact with an asymptomatic carrier of the contagious Coronavirus, it should be noted that most people will not see any symptoms until about 2 - 14 days of infection according to World Health Organization (WHO) and Centre for Diseases Control (CDC). Before I highlight some of the vivid signs to prove you do not have the virus in your body system, you might want to quickly check out the progressive symptoms of Corona Virus first. So how can you be so sure you are free from the coronavirus pandemic even when you are feeling sick? Evaluate your chances of being infected: First, you need to genuinely ask yourself some series of questions. Have you been to any crowded places recently? Did you by any means come in contact with anyone who has tested positive for the COVID-19 virus? Can you remember the last time anyone close to you sneezed or coughed? Did you come in contact with anyone who recently travelled from a region with a high risk of the infection? These questions among others can help you weigh the risk of being infected.Carry out preliminary checks: COVID-19 virus basically affects the respiratory system. One of the common symptoms associated with people infected with coronavirus is shortness of breath often accompanied with cough, fever and sometimes sore throat. If your medical case is totally different from this, you may be suffering from another health condition different from coronavirus. However, if you are suspecting that you may have been infected with the virus, the best thing to do is to isolate yourself at home and call the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) Toll-free number: 080097000010 Only laboratory tests or medical diagnosis can ascertain who is positive for the novel coronavirus or not. Disregard the erroneous information about self-diagnosis such as holding your breath for 10 minutes without sneezing and drinking a lot of water. Medical experts all over the world have revealed that none of these activities can help discover or curtail the coronavirus disease. The best way to prevent contracting the virus is to avoid exposing yourself in the first place by observing common hygienic practices such as regular washing of hands, keeping surfaces clean, and staying away from crowded areas or people who have tested positive for the coronavirus. https://hotels.ng/guides/corona-virus/things-you-should-know-when-you-get-the-corona-virus/

Things to stock up at home before going on self-isolation.

by Rebecca/March 24 12:04 PM Last updated on It has become an imperative according to the directive by NCDC- Nigeria Center for Disease Control- that self-isolation is the best and safest option to avoid getting infected with the coronavirus. What self-isolation means is that you will be staying indoors and completely avoiding contact with other people. You need to do this if you have symptoms of coronavirus to ensure that other people do not contract it from you. If you would rather not get infected at all, before you get tested for coronavirus, while you wait for test results, if you have had a positive test result for coronavirus, then self-isolation is also for you. Non-perishable food items The first and most important thing you should think of getting will be non-perishable food items. Rice, Pasta, and even canned items that will stay a while before going bad. You do not want to be caught up in self-isolation without variety, that will be the first thing that will frustrate you out of your house. For your sake then it is advisable to get non-perishable food items that will be as sufficient for a long while, as we do not know how long this will last. Coffee and tea should also not be left out as well as fruit juice that you like. This is so you have variety of liquids when it comes down to staying hydrated. Meat and beef can be stored in the freezer should be purchased also. As opposed to stocking up on fish that might not last long. Cereal and snacks Cereal and snacks are the lifesavers you don't remember till you need them. You think you can do without them till you just feel like munching on something and you realize you have just rice at home. When what you really need is something you should not have to stress initially before consuming. If you have a sweet tooth, then you should ensure you stock up on your favorite cereals and snacks. Medication Medication for any health issues you have or basic care. If you have an underlying health issue before now, it will really be a good idea to stock up on all the medications as prescribed by your physician. You can as well get essential medications for pain relief like paracetamol, or even Ibuprofen. Bottled water Bottled water is a very great essential that you would not want to run out of especially if you do not feel comfortable enough with the water from the borehole. Stock up as may as you think is reasonable and be considerate of others that will also want to get Toiletries. Detergents, bathing, and washing soap should be stocked up as well. Then ensure you get an extra toothpaste. If you have females at home, then you should as well stock up on sanitary pads especially since we don't know how long this phase will last for. Toilet rolls should also not be left out of the whole picture. You should get minimally, while also considering every other person out there that would like to get one. Hand sanitizers and cleaning spray Hand sanitizers and cleaning spray are very important at times like this. Keeping good hygiene is very important. To do that, you have to ensure that you not only wash your hands constantly, but you also wipe all surfaces frequently. If you happen to run out of cleaning spay then there will be no way to clean surfaces. You have to ensure that does not happen. Thermometer If you can get a thermometer, then it will be a very good option to keep one at home with you. This is to ensure that you have the means to check your temperature constant and if there is any drastic change, you will know to do well and contact the appropriate quarters to get properly tested. Inverter If you live in an area with an unpredictable power supply, then you can consider getting an inverter to help with the downtime. To ensure that you are not caught alone without power supply at the time when you might be really needing it. You can as well check this out for other solutions to deal with power issues. Games or Books If you are an avid reader of paperbacks, then this is a very good time to get your favorite bestsellers from the bookstores for the boring days to come. If you would rather just spend your time playing games, then there are various options to select from. You can check this out for fun things you can do at home. Ensure that before you purchase any food item, you check the expiry date to avoid having to throw them away or eating an expired product. Whatever it is we decide to stock up on to keep us running during isolation should be purchased with others in mind as well. Do not hoard essentials because you feel you will be needing them more.

How companies can improve staff productivity through remote work

by Joel/March 24 11:22 AM Last updated on It is no surprise that a lot of organisations have swiftly transitioned to remote work in the period of coronavirus (Hotels.ng included). This is important because it helps reduce the risk of more people getting exposed to the virus. However, some companies are still reluctant to go fully remote probably because they fear that it might affect the productivity of their staff. Not to worry, in this post I will outline proven ways that will help companies improve their staff productivity while they practice social distancing.  If we?ve learnt anything from this pandemic, it is that the future of work is closer than ever. Scratch that, the future of work is here. And what is that, you ask? It is remote work, less need for the physical presence of workers in a physical space and more automation. The good news here is that thanks in large part to freelance work and the interconnectedness of the world which has allowed skilled workers anywhere in the world to work with others on a team, several tools have been developed to facilitate remote work. These tools along with a few effective tips will go a long way in maintaining a standard of productivity that benefits the individual and the organisation. Top Tools for Remote Work While there are several tools available for remote teams (some for specialised work) I?ll share the top 5 that any organisation, despite their industry, will find useful. SlackDropboxGoogle DriveZoomI Done This 1. Slack Slack is perhaps the most loved tool on this list. This is because of its flexibility, cool design, and provision for integration with numerous apps. Slack allows teams to communicate easily and quickly. It allows the creation of different channels for different topics with the option of making some channels private (like a safe place for managers or project leads to have managerial meetings and the likes). The app also allows sharing of links and documents which are readily viewable within the app. It allows integration with other apps, such as Google Drive, Trello, Clubhouse, Gmail, Dropbox, Zoom, GitHub, Twitter, Google Calendar?really, it?s a long list. A bonus is that Slack, while it is a paid tool, has a free version that can considerably serve any team. An alternative to Slack is Microsoft Teams. Teams performs similar functions as Slack. 2. Dropbox If you only know Dropbox as a cloud storage app, then you are yet to fully explore its capabilities. Dropbox is a tool that provides a modern workspace for teams. It helps teams organise contents, stay focused on the important tasks and get in sync with other team members. With the addition of Dropbox Paper, you can collaborate with other members of your team on contents you are working on and have them review it and leave comments. The ability to leave instant comments helps you and your team save time from having to wait for feedback and you can quickly complete active projects. 3. Google Drive Google Drive may serve as an alternative to Dropbox?s file-sharing feature but the advantage of Drive is the fact that you can share larger files as it offers a larger storage capacity than Dropbox (15GB free storage space). Another benefit of Google Drive is that it allows you to save files directly from Google Docs, Spreadsheet, Sides, Forms and other Google products. 4. Zoom Zoom is a group calling app. Its amazing voice and video quality, ease of use, free version/affordable pricing have made it the favourite group calling app for numerous teams. Some other cool features on Zoom include the option to record the full length of your call and also the option of sharing your computer screen (or a particular part of your screen) with others on the call. 5. I Done This This is a simple app to help monitor the progress of your team. It allows team members to check in daily and monitor what is being done, what has been done and what cannot be done (and why). It also allows managers to get a progress report on the team?s activities. These tools will help improve your team?s productivity when certain practices have been adopted by your team. Some useful tips for working at home 1. Define your workspace Define your workspace It isn?t so unthinkable that most people find working at home difficult?because the home is supposed to be a place where we relax away from work. This is why it is important for each remote worker to define a space where they use for work (your bed might not be the best place here if your bed is so comfy it puts you to sleep). Defining your workspace helps you simulate your work environment and may help increase your focus and productivity. 2. Set your work hours Define your work time Working from home sometimes makes us lose track of time and thus lulls us into thinking we have the whole day to work. This may reduce your productivity. It is advisable to adopt your usual work time (e.g. 9-5). This will help you plan your time in order to achieve your tasks for the day. Tip: You might even decide to have your lunch break at the same time you would if you were at your office. This will help you set boundaries while working from home, not just to make sure you complete your tasks for the day, but also to help you avoid overworking yourself. 3. Check-in with your teammates Constantly sharing your progress with the rest of the team will help you stay focused because no one wants to be seen as a slacker. Also, to lighten the mood, your company can use tools like Telex to create a channel for water cooler conversations (non-work related conversations). This will help keep the team in touch and also improve productivity as light conversations can help relieve stress and refresh the mind. Utilising the above information as well as practising good hygiene during this period will help employees to keep churning out excellent work.

How to deal with power issues while working from home

by Nnamdi/March 24 11:22 AM Last updated on Since the first recorded case of Coronavirus in Nigeria, Nigerians have been advised to practice good hygiene to prevent coronavirus . As the number of cases increased, the Government had to shutdown gatherings, this included churches, mosques, and schools. Business owners were advised to ask their staff to no longer come to work and should instead adopt a Work From Home approach. While in theory, this makes sense, we truly want to stop the transmission of this coronavirus, a major pain point for many remote workers is the epileptic power supply. Another major issue remote workers face is poor internet connection, although the effect of poor internet connection has been mitigated by the adoption of 4G broadband by most internet service providers in Nigeria. In order to properly self-isolate and still ensure you don't receive a query because your laptop battery is dead when you are meant to be on a video call to discuss the next business strategy, you should continue reading this article. Get a Generator - By now, I am certain every one in Nigeria knows the importance of getting a generator. Almost every home has one and if you are going to be working from home, you should. Generators come with its financial implications. You need to ensure it is fueled daily, it is properly serviced, regularly change the oil.Get a solar inverter: Solar inverters can be lifesavers during this remote period. Although, they can be quite expensive as the cost of an inverter with battery can be from 120k to as much as 500k. Portable Energy inverters: This mini inverter is a good and affordable choice for remote workers. This portable inverter can charge your laptops for an entire day as well as power your television and other household devices. This device is affordable at just $155 excluding shipping and might be a very good pocket friendly choice right now. As more cases of coronavirus in Nigeria are being reported ensuring you sort out your power issues is now paramount. Read about fun things you can do while staying at home

The Myth About Heat and CoronaVirus

by Mosimileoluwa Alabi/March 23 10:13 PM Last updated on I once heard a woman say, ?God deliberately increased the temperature from heaven so that it will kill this Corona Virus?. It took me a while to fully make her understand that though heat can be used in reducing the virulence of some viruses, in certain cases, the Coronavirus is a new virus and there has been very little study showing the effectiveness of heat in killing the virus. Asides the heat myth, there have been several other myths about the Coronavirus that have misled people. However, in this article, we will be discussing the effect of heat on Coronavirus. Effect of Heat on Coronavirus According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the Coronavirus can be transmitted in all areas, including areas with hot and humid weather. A team of scientists from Sun Yat-sen University in China carried out a research on the laboratory-grown copy of the coronavirus. They concluded that ?In cold environments, there is longer virus survival than warm ones?. However, this research is yet to be reviewed. Benjamin Cowling, head of the Epidemiology and Biostatistics Division at the School of Public Health, Hong Kong University said, higher temperatures are unlikely to fully stop the continued spread of the virus. ?I don?t think we can count on it stopping in the summer. It may slow down, but it won?t be stopped". Dr. Qasim Bukhari, a computational scientist at M.I.T. said, ?Wherever the temperatures were colder, the number of the cases started increasing quickly. You see this in Europe, even though the health care there is among the world?s best.? Do Your Part However, we shouldn?t use this as an avenue to practice complacency as the result could be disastrous. ?We still need to take strong precautions,? Dr. Bukhari said. ?Warmer temperatures may make this virus less effective, but the less effective transmission does not mean that there is no transmission.? Warmer temperatures MIGHT make it harder for the Coronavirus to survive in the air or on surfaces for long periods of time, but it could still be contagious for hours, if not days. Even seasonal viruses like influenza and the viruses that cause the common cold don?t completely disappear during hot seasons. They are still present at low levels in many people?s bodies and in other parts of the world, biding their time until there are conditions suitable for the viruses to spread again. It will take a little while before health officials and researchers will have a clearer picture of how the weather pattern or application of heat affects the virulence of the Coronavirus. This is why we need to follow the hygienic tips and stay safe in order to contain the virus. As the effect of heat on Coronavirus has not been fully established, do your part in preventing the spread of Coronavirus in Nigeria.

Does The Corona Virus Kill?

by Mosimileoluwa Alabi/March 23 08:40 PM Last updated on ?Does The Corona Virus Kill?? This has been the major question asked by a lot of Nigerians. There has been so much panic and fear parading the whole country. There have also been various degrees of myth surrounding COVID-19 transmission, treatment, and symptoms. Click here to read on the daily progressive symptoms of Corona Virus The advent of coronavirus in Nigeria, particularly Lagos alongside the rising death tolls in Italy has caused people to ask, ?If I get the virus, will I die?? The simple answer to that Question is No if you have a strong immune system and take the necessary measures on time. You will definitely experience the various symptoms the virus gives but there are very high chances of you recovering, although some might get hospitalized. However, people with suppressed immune systems and underlying medical conditions are at a higher risk of becoming severely ill and in some cases lose their lives if they contract the virus. This does not necessarily mean they will die. It just means that on a scale of 1-100%, about 15% are at the risk of becoming severely ill with the virus. Underlying Medical Conditions That Can Increase Your Risk of Becoming Severely Ill With The Virus Heart Diseases with complications.Chronic Lung cancer.Moderate to severe asthma.Diabetes.Liver Disease.Renal Failure. People who are immunocompromised from cancer treatment, as well as people of any age with severe obesity, are also at risk. What WHO Says About Corona Virus In a statement made on the 20th March, 2020, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyeus, the Director-General of WHO, says ?Young People are not invincible from COVID19. The virus could put you in a hospital for weeks, or even kill you?. This is a wake-up call to young people that the fact that you are not at a greater risk of dying from the virus does not mean it will not kill you if you are reckless with your health. Why Are Older People At Greater Risk? As we age, our immune system weakens. This makes us highly prone to infections of all types. There is also a higher chance of a phenomenon called cytokine storm occurring. This is a situation where the immune system in older people gears up, overreacts and produces too many chemicals to fight off an infection. Therefore, leading to a severe inflammatory reaction that can result in significant damage to the body. How Can I Reduce My Risk Of Contracting Corona Virus? If you fall into the vulnerable group, be vigilant with hygiene. Click this link on tips on how to prevent getting the virus. This does not only apply to people who fall in the vulnerable group but people of all ages. There is still so much we are learning about this new virus. But what we know is that it has been declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. Which is why we must join hands to spread the word, not the virus and fear. You should also practice social distancing. Stay safe.

Top Hygiene tips to prevent Coronavirus

by Rebecca/March 23 03:58 PM Last updated on It is no longer news that at the stage the spread of Coronavirus is growing, it will be safer and more affordable to prevent the infection as opposed to hoping to get a cure when you get infected. The virus is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet). It is easily transmissible with something as usual as a handshake, even through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. It is in our best interest to remain and maintain great hygiene so as to prevent getting infected as much as we can. As there is currently no vaccine to prevent coronavirus disease (COVID-19), The best way to prevent the illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus. Keeping good hygiene is the way to get this done. Clean your hands often Wash your hands?frequently and thoroughly with soap and water, especially after you have been in a public place, or after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. If soap and water are not readily available,?use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Try to cover all surfaces of your hands and rub them together until they feel dry. Avoid touching?your eyes, nose, and mouth?with unwashed hands as well as this is the fastest way to transmit the virus from your hands. Cover your mouth when you cough and sneeze Cover your mouth and nose?with a tissue when you cough or sneeze or learn to use the inside of your elbow. When you use a tissue for this, ensure that your properly dispose of it. The next thing to do after that will be to immediately?wash your hands?with soap and water thoroughly for at least 20 seconds. It is always advisable to use the water from a running tap to wash your hands as this gives you the opportunity to scrub between your fingers while rinsing off the soap. If soap and water are not readily available, clean your hands with a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Clean and disinfect?frequently touched surfaces?daily. You will be more likely to wash your hands more often if you do not clean and disinfect surfaces that you touch constantly. This includes tables, doorknobs, light switches, countertops, handles, desks, phones, keyboards, toilets, faucets, and sinks. If surfaces are dirty, clean them using either detergent or soap and water prior to disinfection. Avoid large gatherings and outings as much as possible. The easiest and fastest way to get infected is to be crowded in the same space with a large number of people. If you must attend a meeting, you can opt to use video conferencing for meetings, there are various tools like Zoom and Skype that can be used for just that purpose. When not possible, hold meetings in open, well-ventilated spaces. You can as well consider adjusting or postponing large meetings or gatherings after you have done an assessment of the gathering and realize that a measure of control and proper check would be close to impossible. The same should apply for business travel as well. Settle for online transactions where possible. Limit as much as you can, the rate at which you handle cash as that can also be another easy means to get infected. If you must pay in cash, ensure that you bring out the exact amount that will be needed, that way you can be certain of the source of the cash you will be handling. If there are online payment options, then opt for them instead. Make transfers if possible and if you must use a POS, then ensure your fingers are properly covered and you clean them up immediately afterward. Limit food sharing If you are the type who settles for any food at any time, then now is a good time to curb and work on the habit. It is not possible for you to know for certain the source of every meal you come across, as such, you either make your own meals at home or ensure that you trust the source of the meal you will consume. Clean your phone as well Your phone is not left out of the hygiene process. it is the one thing that we are constantly touching and putting close to our skin and face. It will be to everyone's safety to ensure that we clean not just the screen, but the whole phone, with a damp cloth or a wipe as often as we can. We can as well apply a little sanitizer on tissue paper and use that to clean the entire phone. Wear a facemask if you are sick If you are sick and you must go out at all cost (which is totally unadvisable), you should wear a facemask. If you also live with people in the same house, then the same thing should apply as well since you will be coming around other people. If for any reason you will be unable to wear a face mask (for example, because it causes trouble breathing), then you should do your best to cover your coughs and sneezes, and people who are caring for you should wear a facemask if they enter your room Have healthy people in the household conduct themselves as if they were a significant risk to the person with underlying conditions. For example, wash hands frequently before interacting with the person, such as by feeding or caring for the person. If possible, provide a protected space for vulnerable household members Ensure all utensils and surfaces are cleaned regularly

Well now is your time, you can spend the whole day rearranging the entire closet, nobody will be there to rush you. Take your time and set things in order in your closet and see the satisfaction that comes with that. Update your playlist If you would rather not rearrange, you can decide to clear out and update your music list. There are songs that we all know are due on our playlist. Every time they come on we lose total interest or even skip it entirely. We know such a song should be deleted, but there has never been a perfect time to do that. You can take the time out now to do it. Especially since a lot of people are coming out now to create and share playlist to help people through the coronavirus pandemic. You can check out anyone you think suits your mood and enjoy the season.
