The National Museum, Port Harcourt is an ethnographic museum that serves as a perfect medium to learn about the cultural heritage of Rivers state. It first commenced operation in 1973 at No. 77/78 Bonny Street. The?Office address is No. 2 Harley Street, Old GRA Port Harcourt. The historical center is in the secretariat complex of the Rivers?State?Government which is located at 22 William Jumbo Street, Off Azikiwe Road, Rivers.

The museum contains artifacts related to various ethnic groups indigenous Rivers state including bronze, pottery, masks and masquerades, household utensils, fishing gears, and currencies. It is one of the best historical places to visit in Port Harcourt. It currently houses a permanent exhibition with the theme "Life in the Niger Delta" which was opened to the public on 9th June 2009.

The exhibition showcases the social-economic aspects of life in the region that contributed to the emergence of the area as an economic sphere of influence and a region with a rich blend of cultural traditions.

The following services are available to visitors that visit the Rivers State Museum:

  • Guided tours for schools, individuals and corporate bodies.
  • School outreach programme, Children Art club, long vacation activities for children aged 1-6.
  • Skill Acquisition: batik, tie and dye making, soap making.
  • Consultancy services on cultural matters amongst other services.

They inspect and issue clearance permit certificate for non-antiquity Artworks such as souvenirs, decorative Artworks e.t.c. All artworks for a permit must be brought to the office for inspection. The unit opens for operations from Monday-Friday, 8:30 AM- 3:30 PM
