European Cemetery, Lokoja

History of European Cemetery, Lokoja European Cemetery, Lokoja. The largest of its kind in Nigeria, this cemetery contains the remains of missionaries and European soldiers of the West African Frontier Force stationed in Lokoja between 1867 and 1926. Security/Safety of European Cemetery, Lokoja This is a very safe location. What To Bring Before heading to European Cemetery, Lokoja, here are some helpful things to take along with you: Camera if you fancy documenting your visit Best Features A short distance from the Local Government centres, this cemetery is as large as two football pitches. Buried within these fenced grounds are men and women who shaped the course of Nigerian history from as far back as the 19th century as evidenced by some headstones dating around the 1800s. There are brief inscriptions about those buried. In some places, the inscriptions give details on the buried people such as their names, professions, addresses, and even nature of death. Writer's Review Despite its historic significance, the cemetery has seen better years. It is unkempt and scattered with wilted leaves and weeds. Even its fence is crumbling in some parts. However, there are plans to re-groom the cemetery to match its status and importance. In spite of its physical condition, this is a colonial monument worthy of visiting and reliving anytime one visit this naturally and colonially endowed city.

Built in the 20th century circa 1900, the rest house sits graciously on top of the mount overlooking Lokoja and its wonders. Writer's Review The rest house has been preserved both by nature and government intervention to look as it was during Lord Lugard's days. It was built from locally sourced stones although its roof has been repaired using modern materials. There are two statures by the side. That of the two occupants of the rest house, Lord Lugard and his wife. There are also flags of Great Britain and Nigeria by the statures. It is seen as a mini-museum of colonial history and if you are on a tour, the tour guide is sure to give a brief view of live during the Lugard period. Mount Patti

History of Mount Patti Mount Patti. The name of this towering natural wonder, 458.3 metres above sea-level, means Mountain in the Nupe Language. Security/Safety of Mount Patti This is a very safe location. What To Bring Before heading to Mount Patti, here are some helpful things to take along with you: Mountain Climbing Gear Drinking water Camera to capture the sights and take selfies with Sun Shades and a hat for the heat A local guide or compass Things to do while at Mount Patti Before heading to Mount Patti, here are some helpful things to take along with you: Climb to the peak of the mountain Check out the sight of the Lokoja Confluence from this elevated height Explore the mountains and all its hidden wonders Best Features Known to many as the birthplace of the concept of the Nigeria project, Mount Patti is a major tourist attraction among other natural attractions Lokoja boasts of. Visible from anywhere in the town, it is a plateau of about 1500 feet above sea level with a stretch of about 15 kilometres. Remarkable for its fertile soil, elevated view of the sprawling town and neighboring confluence, distinctive features, and its part in Nigeria's history, it draws tourists to view its magnificence. Prominent of its interesting features is a big Baobab tree that is claimed to be over 100 years old, and Lugard's Rest House. Writer's Review As tempting and exciting as Mount Patti looks, I will recommend only the strong-hearted and those in peak physical health to attempt climbing it. The journey from the mountain foot to its peak averages five kilometres. Going up the plateau is almost as tasking as descending. From the starting point, you pass through a gate where you pay a token to its keepers. The road up the mountain cuts through a mylina tree plantation from where wooden-electric poles are harvested. Midway up, the vegetation pattern begins to change. After an arduous upward journey, you walk into the embrace of an amazing plain. The air on Mount Patti is refreshingly cool and the spot is dizzying, especially at seeing the vast, greenish landscape down, down below. With its serenity, and its surprising good weather and vegetation, it is a peculiar place as evidenced by the absence of mosquitoes despite the lush and grassy environment. It really is a worthwhile experience that everyone who loves adventures should experience. From the top, the scenic plain surroundings of Lokoja, the hinterland, the silent grandeur and the beautiful nature of the confluence of Rivers Niger and Benue can easily be viewed.

An amazing sight, one of the best places to see this natural feature is the famed Mount Patti. There is one distinguishing feature that is easily prominent when viewed from this elevated position – their colors can be easily seen. Whereas the River Niger water appears muddy, that of the Benue appears light blue in color. It is claimed that it was here, filled with the beauty of the two great rivers and its confluence, that the Lady Flora Shaw had the idea to name the country Nigeria after the River Niger. Writer's Review The confluence is the greatest landmark associated with Lokoja, and for right reasons. The grandness of the confluence and the rivers hints one of the mysterious and incredible force of nature in her wildness and beauty.
