History of Nigerian Institute for Oil Palm Research Before the Institute's establishment, research on oil palm husbandry had been undertaken by the then Colonial Department of Agriculture. West African Agricultural conferences were held in 1927.1930 and 1938. a resolution was reached to the effect that research on certain crops should be regionalized and research on crops carried out in its appropriate local territory. The West African Research Organization was created in 1950 and stretched throughout the west-coast.
