About The Independent National Electoral Commission

The Independent National Electoral Commission is a government body responsible for conducting elections in Nigeria. The commission is also charged with assuring the credibility of the elections making sure the election process is free and fair. The Independent National Electoral Commission is also responsible  for the distribution of permanent voters' card to citizens and setting up of polling booths nationwide.  

History of The Independent National Electoral Commission

The history of the Independent National Electoral Commission dates as far back as the pre-independence era when a commission to conduct the 1959 election was established, this commission was called the Electoral Commission of Nigeria. In 1960, the Federal Electoral Commission was established to conduct the elections in 1964 and 1965. This commission did not exist for long as it was disintegrated after the coup in 1966. The military government of General Sani Abacha established the National Electoral Commission of Nigeria in 1995 but this dissolved after the untimely death of General Sani Abacha in 1998. General Abdulsalam Abubakar's administration dissolved the National Electoral Commission of Nigeria in 1998 and this gave birth to the Independent National Electoral Commission which conducted the elections that ushered in the Nigerian Fourth Republic.
