Nigerian Institute for Oil Palm Research conducts into the genetic improvement, production and processing of oil palm, raphia date, coconut and ornamental palms and all forms of palm produce. It seeks improved yields, prevention and resistance to diseases among other things and regulates all research pertaining to this in Nigeria.History of Nigerian Institute for Oil Palm Research
Before the Institute's establishment, research on oil palm husbandry had been undertaken by the then Colonial Department of Agriculture. West African Agricultural conferences were held in 1927.1930 and 1938. a resolution was reached to the effect that research on certain crops should be regionalized and research on crops carried out in its appropriate local territory. The West African Research Organization was created in 1950 and stretched throughout the west-coast. The Nigerian component was renamed the Nigerian Institute for Oil Palm Research (NIFOR) by the Research Institute's Act 33 of 1964. In 1992, it came under the aegis of the federal ministry of Agriculture which has continued to regulate its activities till date.Safety
