About Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria
The Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria is a government body that regulates agricultural research in Nigeria. It seeks to develop a dynamic agricultural research network for Nigeria’s agricultural sustenance and export, improve the quality and quantity of produce for consumption and export and increase food security by contributing to the establishment of sustainable agricultural growth and development in Nigeria.
History of Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria
The Forestry and Veterinary Departments began undertaking research activities in 1920. Fishery research came in 1941. And after independence, different governments made efforts to enhance research processes in the country, using a variety of policies and implemented schemes. In 1999 the Federal Military Government signed the Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria decree No 44 of May 26, 1999. Presidential Retreat on Agriculture and Food Security was held at Kaduna in December 2005 where weak linkage between research and agricultural production was identified as a major constraint in the Nigerian Agricultural sector, a report on this was submitted in July 2006. Further investigative steps were taken and as a result, The Research Council had an Executive secretary appointed and the council took off in November 2006.
