The Petroleum Product Pricing Regulatory Agency has many responsibilities among which are; determination of pricing policy of petroleum products, regulation of supply and distribution of petroleum products, moderation of volatility in petroleum products prices, establishment of parameters and codes of conduct for all operators in the downstream petroleum sector, maintenance of constant surveillance over all key indices relevant to pricing policy and periodic approval of benchmark prices for all petroleum products, maintenance of mediatory role as necessary for all stakeholders in the sector among many others.

History of Petroleum Product Pricing Regulatory Agency

The Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency is an agency of the federal government of Nigeria established in 2003 to monitor and regulate the supply and distribution, and determine the prices of petroleum products in Nigeria. In August 2000, a special 34 strong committee was set up by the government to look into the problems of the downstream petroleum sector, which was beset with numerous issues unbecoming of the country which was one of the world's largest oil producers. The committee's report was submitted in October 2000 and a Presidential Technical Campaign Committee on liberalisation of the downstream sector led by Engr. Funsho Kupolokun began the sensitization of Nigerians on the need for the deregulation of downstream petroleum industry. After the success of this project, the committee also recognized the need for a price regulation agency which was finally achieved with the passing into law of the PPPRA bill.
