The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation is a corporate entity through which the Nigerian government oversees, regulates and takes part in the petroleum industry. The NNPC has the sole responsibility for involvement in upstream and downstream sub-sectors of the industry; it is thus divided into various strategic business units, to allow it maintain its supervisory and inspectorate duties in the exploration and production, gas development, refining, distribution, petrochemicals, engineering, and commercial investments sub-sectors.History of The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation
The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation was established in April 1977 as a result of the merger between the Nigerian National Oil Corporation and the Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel. It immediately embarked on the construction of facilities such as refineries, pipelines and other oil transportation and storage facilities all over the country, most of which was done between 1978 and 1985. It was commercialized into 12 strategic business units in 1988, a structure which it has maintained and is still responsible along with the Department of Petroleum Resources, for all government involvement in the oil business.Safety
