About The Niger Delta Development Commission
The Niger Delta Development Commission formulates policies and guidelines for the development of the Niger Delta area. It is mandated to plan and implement, programs for sustainable development of the Niger Delta with projects including; roads, health, employment, industrialization, agriculture and fisheries, housing and urban development, water supply, electricity and telecommunications. It identifies measures needed to promote the physical and socio-economic development as well as factors inhibiting growth and progress with a view to rectify and solve them. The NDDC also tackles ecological and environmental problems that arise from the exploration of oil mineral and advises the federal government while taking multinationals to task on the prevention and control of oil spillages, gas flaring and environmental pollution.History of Niger Delta Development Commission
The Niger Delta Development Commission was established by then Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo in 2000 with its sole mandate being the development of the oil-rich by hitherto impoverished Niger Delta region of Nigeria. Many Niger Delta Ethnic groups most notably the Ijaw and Ogoni had during the late 1990s increased awareness to their agitation for a better lot in revenue allocation as well as a specific government policy for the development of their lands, which had for decades served as the goldmine financing the Nigerian economy. They had complained of among other things, the low standard of living and environmental degradation being experienced as a result of carelessness in the operation of various oil multinationals.Safety
