About University of Benin
The University of Benin fondly called ‘UNIBEN’ was founded primarily as an Institute of Technology in 1970 but was accorded the status of a full-fledged University by National Universities Commission (NUC) on 1st July 1971. It was one of the first few Universities operated by the Federal Government as the Federal Government on the request of the State Government took over the affairs of the institution on 1st April 1975.
UNIBEN has a vision to “establish a model institution of higher learning which ranks among the best in the world and responsive to the creative and innovative abilities of the Nigerian people". The University has sought to achieve these by its notable academic adventures trying out a Collegiate system in the early nineties, but reverting back to the Faculty system few years after, leaving out the schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Basic Medical Sciences, and the Institute of Child Health, all situated at the College of Medical Sciences. Today, the University has grown in good strides boasting of over 11 faculties, a college of Medicine, a School of Dentistry, a Postgraduate School, and a number of institutes and centers.
UNIBEN offers Diploma, Undergraduate and Postgraduate courses at various levels accredited NUC and other relevant professional bodies in the Country and Abroad, and is affiliated with local and international bodies such as USAID, Food Foundation, UNCF (United Negro College Fund), RMRDC (Raw Materials Research and Development Council of Nigeria) amongst others in the areas of Agriculture, Public Health and Engineering.
UNIBEN is a very large co-educational institution with an enrollment range of 40,000-50,000 students from every state of the nation, Africa and the rest of the world; and this is due to the fact that it has a less selective admission policy, admitting 90-100% of its applicants. Nevertheless, the University has enough provision for its students as it provides several academic and non-academic facilities including, an extensive library, lecture halls and faculty buildings, halls of residence, staff quarters, sports facilities, as well as administrative services.
The University of Benin currently ranks as the 12th best University in the Country, and 4,681 in the world, and has over the years produced an extensive alumni list of notable Nigerians.
The University of Benin offers a wide range of degree programmes in over 15 faculties.
