Western Sahara
It is located in North Africa, bordering Mauritania to the east and south, Morocco to the north and North Atlantic Ocean to the north west. Its capital city is Laayoune. It is a disputed territory occupied partially by Morocco and partially controlled by the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic.
Western Sahara has a hot, dry climate. Heavy dew and fog is produced by cool offshore air currents. The hottest month is July, the wettest month is March and the coolest is January. The best months to visit is from December to January.
Western Sahara has different ethnic groups. They are the Berbers, Haratin, Maghrebi Jews, Hassane, Bedouin, Imraguen people, Tekna, Reguibat tribe, Oulad Tidrarin and Arabs. The official languages of this country are Spanish and Standard Arabic. Islam is the dominant religion in the country. The national dress worn is called the Daraa robe. You are advised to bring both light and warm clothes depending on when you visit. Couscous and peanuts are staple foods in Western Sahara. Lamb, goat and camel meat are favoured while pork is not eaten. Western Saharan cuisine include; couscous, Tajín, ezzmit, arroz, goat meat/milk and El aych.
Some popular tourist destinations in Western Sahara include;
- El Aalun: It is a city in the northern part of the country full of culture and history with old city ruins and souqs. Festivals are also held yearly.
- Tarfaya Beach: It is located in the town of Tarfaya. It is a popular tourist attraction with sparkling blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Enjoy the warm sun, golden brown sands and clear waters of the beach.
- Gold River Peninsula: The peninsula is home to the city of Dakha. There are restaurants and hotels everywhere in this city. Yatch rides, bird watching, surfing, driving and bike riding are activities to enjoy in the peninsula. Kite surfing is also a popular sport.
- Cabo Blanco Seal Colony: They were once a common sight in the Mediterranean sea but numbers dwindled due to unfavorable changes and over hunting. Visit the Cabo Blanco to be awesome by the beautiful seals in their habitat.
