Tunisia
The Republic of Tunisia is the smallest country in North Africa. It contains the eastern end of the Sahara desert. It has its capital city in Tunis. The country is Mediterranean and has a desert climate. Tunisia is known for quite a number of things like El Jan, which is one of the world's most well preserved Roman amphitheater and the amazing city of Carthage.
Tunisia has a hot Mediterranean climate from December to March and hot, dry summers from July to August.
Tunisia was home to the Berbers before Europeans and the Arabs came in. It is about 98% Arab, 1% European and 1% Jew. The official language in Tunisia is Arabic. Other languages spoken are French, Italian, Berber, Turkish and Spanish. Islam is the official religion in the country. The culture of Tunisia is diverse with influences from the Middle East, surrounding African countries, France and Italy.
Tunisian cuisine is a fusion of Mediterranean, Roman, French, Berber, Spanish, Arab and Italian cuisine. It basically consists of a lot of Mediterranean cooking with French, Italian and Roman influences, especially in spice and flavours. Dominant spices in Tunisian cuisine are paprika, garlic, cumin seeds, coriander seeds. Staple foods are rice, fish, lamb, and chicken.
Tunisia is an exotic country known to pleasantly assault the senses. It has quite a lot of tourist attractions. A few of them are:
- Djerba: It has a picturesque beach and the island town of Houmt Souk is a sight worth seeing. The island has shops filled with handicrafts and jewelry. Its beautiful beach, pristine and trimmed by date palms, is a good spot for swimming and relaxing.
- Sidi Bou Said: It is a clifftop village with beautiful architecture and a laid back atmosphere. Shop at the many local handicraft and artisan stalls while being amazed at the sights.
- El Djem Amphitheatre: It is a well preserved Roman relic and is one of the best examples of amphitheater architecture still existing in the modern world. You can climb to the top, walk the corners and marvel at the beauty of the arena.
- Grand Erg Oriental: The Sahara covers much of the country's interior and the most beautiful corner of the desert are the sand dunes known as the Grand Erg Oriental. You can ride on camel backs or ride dune buggies and also watch the sunset over the Sahara.
Some of Hollywood's biggest films, among which include Star Wars, Raiders of The Lost Ark, Jesus of Nazareth and the English Patient were shot in Tunisia.
