Nigerians planning a trip to Syria will need a visa. Visa must be obtained prior to arrival in Syria from a Syrian diplomatic mission located in the traveler’s country of residence. Syria maintains a functional embassy in the capital city of Nigeria. Foreigners who wish to stay 15 days or more in Syria must register with Syrian immigration authorities by the 15th day of their stay. Syria charges a departure tax at its land and sea borders for all visitors except those on diplomatic passports and children under the age of 11. All visitors to Syria must carry a valid passport. Beware that Syria will not accept any passport that has evidence of travel to Israel. Your total stay is counted starting from the day you enter Syria. Visa applicants intending to visit a friend or family need to submit an invitation letter from a family member or host living in Syria. This letter should clearly state the address and contact details of the host, as well as your relationship with them. The visa process of Syria observes some HIV/AIDS entry restrictions. HIV/AIDS tests are mandatory for foreigners from ages 15 to 60 who wish to reside in Syria. The AIDS test must be conducted in Syria at a facility approved by the Syrian Ministry of Health. A residence permit will not be issued until the applicant is determined HIV negative. Foreigners wishing to marry Syrian nationals in Syria must also be tested for HIV.  During the visa application, you will need to provide proof of sufficient funds to last the duration of your stay. Journalists and correspondents of news agencies may not need a visa to travel to Syria. You are advised to exit the country before your visa expires and present documents that show you have the intention to do so. This visa does not serve study purposes. You cannot be enrolled in any of the institutions of learning in the country.

Nigerians traveling to Syria for business need a business visa. The Syrian business visa is a multiple entry visa valid for 30 to 90 days. It is also possible to get a 6 months visa; valid for one or multiple trips in a one-year period. A foreigner who wants to stay in Syria for more than fifteen days after the date of entry, have to inform the immigration office or its branches in the provinces to apply for a residence permit or to extend his visa. The granted residence permission is not a license to work and those who wish to engage in employment in the Syrian Arab Republic should obtain permission from the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor. In case of loss or damage of the residence card, the card holder have to check the immigration department in Damascus or its branches within three days from the date of loss or damage to replace it with a new one. Travelers coming from areas infected with yellow fever (including Nigeria) should reveal a vaccination certificate against this disease. Those wishing to stay in Syria for more than a year should show a Devoid of AIDS certificate (CVI). The certificate serves to confirm that the traveler is HIV-free. Any tourist bringing a pet along should carry with him a health certificate written in English, authenticated in his country. As for cats and dogs, they must be accompanied by a certificate of vaccination against rabies. You can sign contracts, partake in auctions and exhibitions and also speak at business-related events while on this visa. Make sure you don’t have any evidence of travel to Israel on your passport, or you will not be let into the country. Visa fees might vary depending on where you apply, but it is usually $46. You will need to provide an invitation letter from the Syrian company you will be visiting. This letter will also contain their detailed address, accompanied with the date and actual purpose of your trip. If the intention is to attend a meeting or seminar, confirmation/invitation from the conference organizer/institution is required. If you are employed, you will have to present a certificate from your employer stating or allowing your business travel. Proof of sufficient funds to cover the costs of stay (e.g. bank statement for 2 recent months) is required.
