Nauru
The country covers an area of about 21 sq. km making it the third smallest country by land area. The country has a parliamentary system of government.
The official language of the country is Nauruan which is spoken by about 96% of the Nauruan population. English is also spoken in the country and it is a language of government and commerce.
The main religion in Nauru is Christianity and the Protestants are taking the lead as two-third of the population adhere to Protestantism. One-third of the population are Catholics and are served by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Tarawa and Nauru.
Independence Day is celebrated in the country on the 31st of January. Also the recovery of the Nauruan Population after the war is celebrated on the 26th of October.
Literacy rate in Nauru is very high as 96% of the population are educated. Education is compulsory for children from ages 6-16 years. The country has three primary schools, two secondary schools, and one university.
Nauruans are said to be the most overweight people in the world with 97% of Men and 93% of women suffering from obesity. The country also records the world’s highest level of type 2 diabetes. Most of them also suffer from kidney failure and heart diseases.
Transportation in Nauru is by foot, trains, cars, buses, and airplanes. The Nauru International Airport is the only airport in the country.
The climate in Nauru is hot and humid throughout the year as there is constant rain and without a dry season. The rainier period is from December to April and a less rainy period from May to November which is also the best time to visit the country. Rainfall can vary from year to year and sometimes it can rain a lot even in the least rainy season. However, June has the lowest rainfall records.
The island is a great place to spend your holiday. There are different places to visit like:
- Anibare Bay: This is the most visited place on the island. It is the home of most of the country’s tropical beaches. It is a great place to spend your holiday.
- Buada Lagoon: This is a freshwater lagoon which is heavily surrounded by palm trees on all sides. Although, the water is not conducive for swimming and diving, one can take pictures of the lagoon.
- Linkbelt Oval Sport field: This is a place to watch sports especially during the weekends. It is a great place for relaxation.
The country records an average of 200 visits in a year. There are only two Hotels to stay in Nauru when you visit which are the Menten Hotel and the OD-N-Aiwo Hotel.
