Grenada

Grenada, which is located at the far south of the Caribbean is known as the "spice island" owing to the fragrant spices that grow on its soil. It is an island country in North America. The country exports nutmeg (1/3 of the world's supply), mace, cloves, etc. It has its capital in the city of St George's. It also has lush rain forests, beautiful beaches, vibrant seaside villages, and quite a number of mountains.

The country has a tropical climate which is hot and humid in the rainy season and cools due to the trade winds in the dry season. It is best to visit Grenada during the high season winter months (January to April) as these are the driest and least humid months. Grenadians wear modern-style clothing and are often wearing straw hats to protect against the sun.

Grenadians are 82% of African descent. There are some South Asians (East Indians) and Europeans as well. Grenada is about 65% Roman Catholic and most of the rest of its population belong to the Protestant or Anglican congregations. The small Indian population in Grenada generally subscribe to Hinduism.

Grenada's national foods are Calaloo soup, and Oildown. Calaloo is a vegetable similar to spinach and Oildown consists of stew with salted meat, onions, celery, dumplings, carrot, daheen, breadfruit all steamed in coconut milk. Grenadians often drink beer, rum punch, maple syrup, cocoa tea and "mauby", a soft drink made from the bark of the mauby tree. Grenada's official language is English but many Grenadians speak patois, which is a combination of English words with elements of French and African languages.

Some popular tourist locations in Grenada are:
  • St George's: St George's is one of the prettiest port towns in the Caribbean. Here the city is busy, beautiful, and very colourful featuring brick and stone buildings with red-tiled roofs lining the streets. The city also boasts a National Museum filled with gems from the country's past, the House of Chocolate which is a must see for cocoa fans, and the St. George's Market Square.
  • Underwater Sculpture Park: This Park was created by Jason deCaires Taylor, a most renowned artist. The sculptures are spectacular and life-sized and reside in a unique submerged art gallery that also serves as an artificial reef in a marine protected area. Divers and snorkelers can come face to face with these sculptures under water.
  • Carenage: This is a lovely place to wander along the waterfront, window shop, relax in any one of the splendid restaurants, and interact with Grenada locals. It is a busy area and a perfect location to experience Grenada.
  • Grand Etang National Park and Forest Reserve: The park offers an experience of the beautiful Grand Etang Lake, a rich diversity of plants and animals, beautiful rain forest scenery and rewarding hikes and treks. It is certainly a must visit for nature lovers in Grenada.

Grenada has luxury accommodations just as well as luxury ones.
