Dominica

Dominica (The Commonwealth of Dominica) is a mountainous, forested North American country located on the Eastern Caribbean, south of Guadeloupe and north of Martinique. Dominica is part of the Windward Islands. It is an unspoiled paradise for hikers, divers, and naturalists to explore nature at its finest. The country has a good number of waterfalls, lakes, rivers, and hot springs to offer. The capital of Dominica is Roseau. Dominica must be distinguished from the Dominican Republic as they are two separate countries.

The country's climate is hot and humid generally with a cool, dry season from January to April and a hot, humid and rainy season from mid-June to mid-November. It is best to visit Dominica during the cool dry season.

The country is 86.8% black African, 8.9% mixed and has a mixed minority of the Lebanese, Syrians and Asians. Dominican culture is a fusion of British, French, and West Indian cultures.

The Dominicans favour meat like chicken, goat, lamb or beef covered in sauce. Their cuisine features quite a lot of local fruits like passion fruit, tamarind, and sour sop. The Dominicans also boil and drink sorrel, a red flower that only blooms around Christmas.

Being the "nature island of the Caribbeans" as it is often called, Dominica has a large assortment of interesting locations to offer the world. A few of them are:
  • Emerald Pool Nature Trail: After the tasking hike it takes to get here, this pool's cool water is a great place to relax and swim whilst taking in the greenery of the rain forest around.
  • Boiling Lake: This has been called the second largest hot springs lake in the world. It offers a natural spa experience in its gray-blue waters. It must be visited with a guide though.
  • Screw's Sulfur Spas: In the village of Wotten-Waven, this series of lush sulfur spas exists in the midst of the island's natural greenery. The three pools are of varying temperatures and were built by Screw himself.
  • Papillote Tropical Gardens: This garden is rain forest inspired and was built by Anna Jno Baptiste. It is quite the botanical haven with trails shaded by a canopy of trees. Most plants in the garden are labeled for interested Botanists.

Dominica was the last Caribbean island to be colonized by the Europeans due to the fierceness of its original occupants, the native Caribs.
There are a select number of hotels ranging from budget to luxury to choose from if you choose to visit Dominica.
