This intriguing rock in Plateau State has this ability to hold any visitor spellbound.
Wase Rock is one of the five breeding places for the White pelican in Africa. The intimidating poise of the rock is irresistible as it towers into the sky. The rock seems to gaze at the plains of the Southern Zone of Plateau State. The magnificent sight the rock commands can be seen and felt clearly from a distance of three to four kilometers from its actual location. As an observer’s gaze ascends its slopes from the foothill, he/she suddenly gets interrupted by blinding rays of sunlight embracing the upper fringes of the outcrop. It is located about 216 kilometres southeast of Jos near Wase town.
Interestingly, the most notable among the said powers of the rock, is that it provides a kind of protective shield for Wase community. This, perhaps explains why no invader has successfully penetrated its walls, despite various attempts during crisis situations.
A close encounter with the dome shaped Wase Rock reveals its stunning appearance as well as its naked isolation; with no tourists, the
white pelicans, or even the black monkeys or baboons that once prowled the area. To any visitor at this site, the two-hour journey from Jos to the location might be a little stressful, but it will always be rewarding as images of the picturesque Wase rock will forever impinge on his mind each time he looks up into the sky.
