Three Ways to Screw Up Your Vacation in Port Harcourt

Port Harcourt is a city of winding creeks, beautiful beaches, and arguably the catchiest name in the catalogue of Nigerian city names.  As the center of activity for the nation’s petroleum industry, Port Harcourt plays an important role in Nigeria, as oil is one of the country’s most important commodities in the country and the main foreign exchange earner. The city is much endowed in tourist’s attractions that it makes a perfect vacation trip incredibly worthwhile with ease of mind.

To maximize your vacation time and not unwittingly screw up your much anticipated trip to Port Harcourt, here are few simple steps you can take.

*Planning*

Prior to your trip, it always a good idea to research your destination and construct a flexible timeline of sightseeing. A brief idea of what you want to do is smart, efficient, and ultimately will save you some naira. What is however important is not to plan to the point that your trip to Port Harcourt lacks flavor. You are going there for a reason – you are taking a break from the usual routine and having a time for yourself. If you plan every moment of your trip, you miss the entire point. Usually the most fun and rewarding experiences are the ones you don’t plan and probably didn’t even know could happen. This doesn’t mean you should be apathetic – plan a little, just don’t get too rigid.

*Food*

Food is one of the most important aspects of the travel experience. There is no better way to learn about the culture of people in Port Harcourt than participating in their meal-time rituals. While it is fine to eat at restaurants once or twice, do not make this a habit. Instead, seek out street stalls and local joints that would provide you with rich, authentic food memories. A popular meal of the Rivers people is bole and fish, which is simply roasted plantain and fish with pepper and palm oil sauce.  A street called D-Line is lined with bole and fish vendors.

*Experience and sight-seeing*

Most places we travel to on vacation are carefully selected and might be a result of lots of thought and discussion. In Port Harcourt, there are beaches, museums, a natural park, cinemas et al, but don’t let these primary attractions be the beginning and the end of your travel experience in the south. The magnificent cultural center is widely known as an attraction where historical artifacts are exhibited, and there is a theater stage and auditorium for live performance. You can grab a ticket to see a play if you are lucky to visit during showtime.

Visit the Port Harcourt Tourist beach and don’t stop at lounging on the fine sand. You could take a bike ride or go horse-riding. Don’t limit yourself to the top tourist spots in Port Harcourt you find in your guide book. Step back and have a wonderful time experiencing the city.
