Sugar land, Abuja Sugar Land Restaurant & Lounge is quite the disappointment of a destination in more ways than one. Firstly, the name ‘Sugar Land’ is quite misleading. This is yet another “Nigerian” restaurant on Port Harcourt Crescent and has nothing sugar-related on its menu at all. So, if you’re a sugar nut and you happen to hear someone mention ‘Sugar Land’ in passing, don’t get too excited and ask where it is hoping to visit somewhere similar to the witch’s house in the Hansel and Gretel story.

In addition to having a very misleading name, the Sugar Land Restaurant also fails in providing food that at least give one the feeling of having a sweet meal. Sugar land, AbujaThey seem to have put in a lot of effort to keep it as basic as possible – rice, eba, semovita, pundo (yamflour), egusi soup – and the only thing that shows a bit of imagination is the ‘Pasta’ section where you’ll find items like ‘spicy indomie’ listed along with spaghetti. It’s not a crime to be simple, but it is when you can’t even deliver on that much. There is nothing exceptional about the food at Sugar Land Restaurant. It’s good food, but that’s about it.

Speaking of the environment, the building itself is located in a compound that seems to still be under construction. There is an obvious attempt to spruce up the area around the restaurant itself though, with a tiled car park in front, and fairly decent interior décor. The colorful lampshades hanging from the ceiling show at least a little thought went into that aspect, but nothing else really stands about the interior besides that. There is a small platform across from the entrance used for performances during events, and the seating arrangement is a bit sparse. A lot more could have been done with the space.

One would think the service would make up for the restaurant’s shortcomings in every other area, but such a person would be wrong. The staff at Sugar Land Restaurant is non-chalant about the goings on at the restaurant. Getting information out of them is a futile exercise, so basically, just order your food and wait for it to arrive. People do have events here from time to time, and some people do stop by to eat so maybe there’s a certain crowd it appeals to or it’s an acquired taste. – No. 24, PortHarcourt Crescent, Off Gimbiya Street, Area 11 – Garki.
