If you want to see the historic past in Nigeria, do not bother staying in Lagos but take the next ride to Badagry. Badagry is one place in Nigeria that has been richly blessed with relics, artifacts, landmarks and houses that would teach you so many things about your beloved country, Nigeria. Badagry is a city of so many firsts in Nigeria. It is not only slave trade relics that Badagry got to offer you about Nigeria. Of course , Nigeria is not all about slave trade stories even though, it experienced such but there are so many things that you can learn about the country from Badagry.

The Slave Trade Relics

We would not stop talking about Badagry’s history without bringing back slave trade in the 15th century. The Atlantic Ocean is close by and was the route that took a lot of Nigerians out of the country as slaves. Years have gone after this era and this place still make the slave trade experience stare in our eyes in many landmarks and monuments.

First storey building

When you come to Badagry, you are going to see the first storey building that was built in Nigeria by the Christian Missionaries in 1842. This place later became the home of Ajayi Crowther and it was here that he translated the English Bible into Yoruba.

Point of No Return

Whenever a slave gets to this place, there is no salvation for that person because he or she is never going to return. There are ships waiting to sandwich slabs to the Caribbean, Europe, America and Brazil.

Badagry Heritage Museum

One place where you would learn about the slave trade is the Heritage Museum. You know that the town was once a slave outpost and this museum got so much for you to see. There are slave boats, padlock and many other slave relics for you to see.

The Markets

Vlekete Slave market was where slaves were bought and sold. Moe than 1500 slaves found themselves here. Imagine that a mirror from the Europeans could be exchanged for 35 African slaves. We have present day markets like the Agbalata International market and the Hunto market. Coconut is in abundance and you may have to literally drink yourself to stupor if you love coconut.

Gberefun Island

An untapped island that got some of the nicest terrains in Badagry is the Gberefun Island. You cannot get to this island without taking a boat ride to it. It is an adventurous place for you to be with friends.
