Reasons Why staying at Cheap Hotels may be a Bad Idea

Majority of the hotels in Nigeria make a ton of money from their affordable room services because that is what many of their guests request for. We have highlighted some of the dangers of trying to cut cost to save money while making use of some of these hotels. These hotels be it in Lagos or anywhere else are definitely lower in ratings than star hotels Lagos.

Dirty Room

These affordable rooms may not be as neat as we expect them to  be especially from some hotels that are still struggling to balance their books. The bedspreads can be smelly because it has taken a while for them to be washed. The room stench may be offensive too because it must have been weeks since room service cleaned up after the last guest. You may end up finding some used personal stuffs that should never be seen by another guest in the room.

Water Issue

Maybe you have to leave at first light. Or you may have some other urgent need to use water while you’re lodging at a hotel. You get to the bathroom and there is no water, and the receptionist may be unavailable to help or, worse, unable to sort out the issue promptly. This can leave you angry and frustrated. So ensure that the hotel you pick out to lodge in has the capacity to provide such basic services and avoid the penny-wise-pound-foolish scenario altogether.

Mosquito infestation

Another issue with using cheap hotels may be the chance of getting checked into a room infested with mosquitos and other such vermins. Considering such hotels may be plagued by a power problem as well, you may very well be in for a rather uncomfortable, if not torturous night.

Rodents as Roommates

Rodents may be your uninvited roommates in some of these hotel rooms. This is usually as a result of the untidy nature of the premises of the hotel. You step into any hotel with poor room service or less than pristine environmental cleanliness, you can be rest assured that rodents will abound in such environments.

For the sake of anonimity, we are publishing the reviews sent to us by some persons who had not-too-pleasant experiences while they lodged at a hotel that seemed too good (cheap) to be true.

We were robbed

Checked into a hotel in Benin with my then girlfriend. Around 2am, armed robbers came to the hotel and ordered everybody out. It was like a movie scene. Some women/girls wearing only pants, some fully unclad, some on transparent nighties, some on towels, some men were naked, some only boxers etc. The robbers brought a bag and we began donating all our phones, watches, wallets, shoes, etc.

It was a sight to behold.

In the morning the owner of the hotel gave each person 10K and apologised.

Wardrobe was a dumpsite

I lodged in one hotel in kaduna. Later, I discovered the back of the wardrobe has been turned to a dumpsite and almost filled to capacity.

Boring TV channels

Checked into an hotel and the TV channels were Ghana owned except Supersport and African Magic.

No PHCN

I checked into a hotel in Nsukka. After giving me the toiletries, they gave me two candle sticks with the excuse that their generator is bad.

Under my bed was a dumpsite

Dirtiest hotel I have ever stayed in.. I can’t believe I paid 20k to sleep in filth.

Something fell and rolled under the bed and when I bent to pick it, I saw condoms, dirts and chicken bones. It seemed like the person handling housekeeping usually sweeps everything under the bed and walks away.

Insects almost sacrificed me

I once went to a small town where there were only one or two hotels in town. That day i was bitten like a sacrificial animal by all sorts of bugs on the mattress and in the environment.

My room was infested

I paid N2,500 and was ushered into the room. Exhausted, I dropped my bag on the bed and proceeded to check out the bathroom/toilet. Immediately I opened the bathroom door I was overwhelmed by escaping mosquitoes in their millions.I ran out of the room and called the attendant. He had to send someone to buy insecticide for me. Thought that was all until I went into the bathroom and saw a pond of water infected with ‘those small nematodes that bear a resemblance to snakes.

Hotel staff saw me naked

I came out of a hotel bathroom in Warri to take a call from my telephone handset. I was standing completely unclad while discussing on phone when the door opened and three ladies and a man walked in; chatting excitedly before the lead lady noticed me and hurriedly shoved everybody back. They were the hotel employees on room inspection. Few minutes later I got a call from the hotel manager apologising for the incident. They were obviously more embarrassed than me.

I had a rat as a roommate

Went out with my host and returned to find the waste basket where I had dropped stuff I had just eaten turned upside down.

Knowing a rat had gained entrance, I searched for it and finally trapped it in the bathroom. Went out the whole night and came back to find out that the rat had escaped by eating out the entire bottom panel of the wooden door!

Na so I carry my bag check myself out of the hotel sharply, before the hungry rat go come chop my toes or something more valuable.

I hate those tiny imperial lather soaps they put in the bathrooms.
