ABUJA – The Nigeria Police Force yesterday joined other security agencies in calling on Nigerians to be more security conscious and vigilant during the Yuletide season and particularly advised all citizens to be extra cautious while receiving gifts from strangers that may pose as friends during the season, to avoid receiving hampers rigged with explosives as gifts.

The Inspector-General of Police, Solomon Arase, in his statement, further advised against the use of fireworks and other explosives in the holiday celebrations as they could prove to be a security risk by serving as a distraction and cover for crimes.

In the statement signed by Force Public Relations officer, Acting ACP Olabisi Kolawole said, “He (IGP) also enjoined citizens to shun all forms of violence and unlawful acts, eschew bitterness, hatred and rancour and go about their legitimate duties without fear of intimidation from any quarter during and after the season. Meanwhile, to ensure a peaceful and incident-free Yuletide, the IGP has directed all Zonal AIGs and Command Commissioners of Police, to take necessary measures in ensuring the provision of adequate security for worshippers, travelers, picnickers and all citizens across the country before, during, and after the celebration.

“Command Commissioners of Police are to personally ensure that all key and vulnerable points within their jurisdictions, including places of worship, recreation centres, motor parks, shopping malls, highways, financial institutions and all places of public resorts are adequately and effectively protected” she said.
