Iconic Monuments in Kano

There are a lot of national monuments all over Kano State. Coming to Kano the first time may  have you feeling a little out of place, especially if it is your first time in northern Nigeria as well. However, you will adapt soon enough to the environment though and will very likely fall in love with the place. We have listed some places out here that are historic and have great significance to the country in general.

The British Council’s Premises

This iconic building, which was once a popular place for the Colonial Masters, is adjudged to be over 400 years old. An Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Rumfa once made use of this building. There may come a time soon when the government will make this place a national monument.

Gidan Makama House

Gidan Makama House was once the palace of the Emir of Kano. However, today, it has become a museum that houses a huge collection of the artifacts, crafts and art works that depict religious, historical and political heritage of Kano. You will see things from the 19th century down to the 21st century in this house.  It is situated close to the Kano State Museum.

Gidan Rumfa

This is the building where you will find the Emir of Kano. Gidan Rumfa is an enchanting edifice set up on a huge landscape. It was said that this palace was built in the 13th century by Emir Muhammadu Rumfa. It also passes off as a tourist hot spot and has become a haven for a lot of politicians who are courting political favour over the years.

You may have heard the legends surrounding this place. You will learn to really appreciate the creativity of the people here. A lot of those who have visited this place are always impressed by what the residents are able to achieve with crude materials, especially in building such a massive defense structure.  The wall is massive and stretches very long.

Dala hills

Many people may not have not heard about Dala Hills. Should you ever visit Kano, it is one of the landmarks that you will see. The view of the city from atop the hills is picturesque. It is definitely among the national monuments that you should check out in Kano.

Kano is an affordable place to be at, with respect to accomodation and cost of intra-city transportation. Food is cheap and there is an air of safety about the place because of the way the security is set up around the city.
