Get Fit While Travelling: 5 Methods That Really Work

When you are out and about going from tourist attraction to train station, it’s hard to keep up with your diet and exercise plan. Though you’re out walking all day and it may seem like you’re getting a lot of exercise, you’re probably also eating a lot of high-calorie foods that goes against all the good you’re doing with the walking and stair-climbing. Those extra pieces of pastries are not helping either. Contrary to the generally held opinion, calories do count on vacation as much as you wish they didn’t. So if you want to stay on course and earn those meals, you might want to add additional exercise to your vacation travel plan:
*1. Have a plan*
First things first; make a plan. Before you depart on your trip, be sure to set your goals. Do you want to keep your fitness or improve your fitness? Perhaps your goal is just to continue a healthy diet? Whatever it is, be specific in setting your goals. If you want to work out on a day, consider the time of the day it’s best to do so – in the morning before it gets too hot? Or maybe in the afternoon after a long day of exploring and before dinner? Whatever works for you!
*2. Stick to it*
Now that you have a plan, you need to stick by it. That’s partly why it is so important to be realistic with your plan – otherwise you won’t be able to execute it.
*3. Make your lodging your gym*
You probably walked all day the day before, but you got up early to watch the news or eat breakfast in your room. As much as you know you should put on your workout clothes and hit the gym, the thought of looking presentable just doesn’t sound appealing. You aren’t alone. While you’re waiting for breakfast or listening to the news, you can take advantage of the floor space in your room to get in a quick workout.  Chair crunches, lunges, calf raises, and planking are just a few exercises you can do.
- *Use what’s available at your accommodation*
Your hotel might have some useful ways to help you work out. If the weather is friendly enough outside, then you’re in luck. Going for a swim, using the stairs, or going for a run are some of the things you can do around. You can even take advantage of the stability of a firm hotel bed by using it for lower body workouts like reverse hyperextensions.
- *Ensure you are active every day, everywhere, and in every way*
Unlike a rigid gym routine back home, keeping fit when you are on the road can be fun, spontaneous, and should always be creative. If you don’t like a typical workout, take the day off from your usual routine and get creative. If you need a bit of inspiration to get outdoors, put in your headphones and put on a lively playlist that will make you feel like moving. Before you know it, you would’ve convinced yourself to take a 10km hike for the day. The other plus side is exploring could get you some of the best photos from your trip – unexpected ones you wouldn’t have gotten otherwise.
Keeping up with an exercise routine when you travel will keep you motivated to continue doing it at home – even if it takes a few days to get back into your healthy eating habits. You’ll feel better about yourself, and might even add to your regular workout.
