Emir Palace, Bauchi

The Emir’s palace is one of the most spectacular features in Bauchi and one of Bauchi’s architectural wonders. It was originally built as a fortress for the Emir and his officials. It has tall defence walls and spacious areas for important activities such as Friday prayers and the Durbar during the colonial days. The beautiful arched balconies and windows are complemented by the nave-like arches within the palace itself. The Emir of Bauchi’s palace was built by the famed Babban Gwani, real name Muhammadu Durugu; a 19th century master builder from Zaria. He built mosques and palaces in Kano, Katsina, Bauchi and Zaria. The emir still lives and holds court in the place. It has been updated with modern touches like air conditioning.
Visitors can go around the palace and even take pictures.
