Calabar has many historic places you can visit during the Calabar Carnival. Some of these places are tourist favourites. There are lots to learn from these places about ancient and modern Nigeria. The government of Cross River State is doing everything possible to preserve the effect of the colonial era.

Old Residency

The Old Residency is actually the first building built by the colonial masters. It was built in Glasgow then shipped over to Old Calabar in bits. It is an imposing ornate structure that served as the offices of the colonial masters. There was another place in the country built like this: the Lugard House in Lokoja. The Old Residency was taken over by the National Commission for Museums and Monuments. You can see a lot of relics and artifacts from the past here

Calabar Museum

Calabar Museum is one of the places you can visit during the Calabar Carnival. There are a lot of artifacts, pictures, and relics to see here. Some of the artifacts will tell you more about the slave era in the country. The works of the colonial masters are littered neatly here.

Mary Slessor’s Tomb

Mary Slessor is a hero to many women during the barbaric era in the country when twins were considered evil. She was able to stop the killing of twins and spared thousands of lives in the country. She lived in Calabar and later died here. Here in the city is where her tomb lies. You can visit it as well.

Slave Trade Museum

The Calabar Carnival is often used to foster unity in the country,  and in the light of this you need to see the Slave Trade Museum. This museum carefully chronicles the lives and sufferings of thousands of people who were sold as slaves. Some pictures here can tell you more than any guide would.

The Duke Town Church

The first church ever built in Nigeria was the Duke Town Church. The Colonial Masters used this church for religious purposes and converted a lot of Nigerians. You may not have the opportunity to see this place if you are busy. When you come for the Calabar Carnival, this place should be place to visit.
