Old Bodija, Ibadan, is known for old houses, or houses owned by old people. Or, old houses converted to service outlets. Above all these, it is known for clean streets, manned gates and a good road network. It is also known for Cafe Chrysalis, a quiet, cozy restaurant somewhere in it.

Many people go to Cafe Chrysalis on recommendation from another person and none – quote me on this – comes back with a bad experience. On the outside, it looks like another old house from the 70s (or 80s), it is a bungalow with a well-trimmed hedge, that looks homely and inviting.

On your way here, you may find yourself calling (and re-calling) whoever recommended this place, trying to make sure you are on the right route; this is because there is no signpost signaling entry to the restaurant.

There is no parking lot, so you pack on the street – remember this is a closed estate, so your cars are safe – and security guards help you park properly.

The quality of the food is captured in one word: fantastic. They also own a bakery, serving pastries as part of their menu. And their service is as good as any in Nigeria, with courteous staff, you would be forgiven if you think you are in another state with a significantly higher profile (names withheld).

The setting is designed to make you feel you are at home, and just sitting in for dinner, the number of tables do not exceed six, so you have a cozy atmosphere serenaded by music from the speakers. Wallpapers, and antique sculptures are present to make your stay enjoyable, as if the blue (warm) colour of the interior does not bid you enough welcome.

The menu is impressive and cuisines from around Nigeria and outside are available, on order of course. Booking ahead is available, not by call or text though, you will have to come personally and reserve a table for yourself, and order food to be consumed on your return.

If you are in town, looking for a nice place to have a quiet dinner or date – with that special homely feel – and do not mind getting lost for a little bit, you should get to Cafe Chrysalis, they are open for business at hours the estate rules allow.

PS: If you like a little drink while you eat, you should be here already. Their bar is…
