At a time when Abuja was still trying to establish itself as the nation’s capital, Banex Plaza sprung up and made a name for itself as one of Abuja’s first Plazas. This was a very significant development as at the time, real estate in the capital was still a bit iffy. The first phase of Banex Plaza was built in the early 2000s and sparked some serious economic activity in the city.

Today, Banex Plaza is a culmination of three phases – each phase containing about three buildings of about 500 shops in total – selling a variety of items ranging from clothes, to food, to gadgets and a number of services. If you’re looking to buy something, the chances of you not finding it at Banex are slim to none. There are numerous clothing stores, of course, computer shops, shops where you can buy office equipment and/or stationery, electronics stores, lighting stores, you name it. But, the stores Banex is most popular for, is phone shops.

Banex has a plethora of shops where you can purchase mobile phones, and while this wouldn’t seem like such a big deal, it gives a sort of pleasure to shoppers to have such variety. Not because each shop sells different brands of phones, but simply because of the benefit of haggling. When you find what you’re looking for, you have the opportunity to haggle with the seller and look around other stores to see if you can get a better deal. No need to be shy here, a very reasonable number of merchants are more than willing to come as close as they can to matching what you can afford. And along with the phone shops come repair centers where you can take your phones and other gadgets to get fixed if they break or have internal problems.

You should be careful though, when taken your gadgets to be fixed. The guys who work here are really good at what they do, but everyone is trying to make a profit. If you’re not sure who to trust, go with someone who has a regular shop they go to for this sort of thing. You’re less likely to be taken for a ride if you’re referred by a good customer of the shop. Otherwise, you might end up with your phone missing a part or two after it’s “fixed” or paying way more than you’re supposed to for something simple. - Plot 750, Aminu Kano Crescent, Wuse 2.Banex Plaza, Abuja
