African Bush Bar.

Located at Achi Street, Independence layout, Enugu Rd, Nsukka. The name African Bush Bar might confuse you, yes it confuses me too. True to its name, from a distant view, it looks like a bush bar with its thatched roof, but a closer look would change your mind.

This bar shares exactly the same compound with the major Mr Biggs eatery in the town. But this is a common instance as you may have noticed around here that people like their meals with some pints of beer. Mr Biggs restaurants are no exception to this rule to complying with this tradition. But no matter what, beer cannot be taken inside the restaurant; a lot of people will find that odd and they will never come back. No matter the culture of the area, the sight of ‘green bottles’ being consumed plus its smell can make some ‘Ajebuter Pikin’ vomit on their Mr Biggs food.

Therefore, so as not to lose customers of those who like alcohol with their meals and those who don’t, a place was created within the compound of the Mr Biggs building for the purpose of an outdoor bar. I submit to you this is quite innovative and the look of the bar is mainly traditional, everything there from the tables to chairs, openers and even refrigerators are either well branded with the colours of popular drinks companies or it shows the splendor of African heritage. The high point of it is that the local ‘palmy’ i.e Palm-Wine is served here also.

The service level there is also standard and you can expect a value-for-money service.

From the clean environment there to the servers, it spells classy; even classier than most hangout spots you’ll find around here. The roof was covered with a cone-shaped thatch as the name ‘ African Bush’ connotes, to shield the heads of customers from the hot Nsukka sun as well as the frequent rains here.

The only thing one may not be sure of is whether this joint is regulated by the Mr Biggs franchise too or these brewery companies just seized the opportunity they saw with the excess space the Mr Biggs eatery has, and utilized it well. This was what I wondered about till I drained the cup of Palm-Wine I had bought; only those who were observant enough would notice my curious face as I drank. I will definitely be back here soon.
