The very idea of travelling solo in Nigeria – or anywhere, really – can be really scary especially if you are travelling to or  through an unfamiliar location. It can be reassuring to have someone with you who can act as a guide or simply share your sense of wanderlust with you. Also, there is the question of danger – you are definitely safer when you travel in groups rather than alone. However, there are some benefits to getting out on the road and traveling solo in Nigeria.

You really discover yourself

You find out a lot about yourself when you travel alone in Nigeria. A lot of the time on the road, staring out the window as the tropical landscape flashes by, you really get a lot of time to reflect on different things about your life. Traveling with a partner or companion very likely will not afford you that alone time.

You discover Nigeria for yourself

Traveling to a new place with a group or companion often means discovering that place through your perspective and like ten or more other perspectives depending on how many people are in your group. You often find yourself drawn to whatever the group is interested in and participating in the events the group or, at least, you and your companion decide to participate in. When you travel solo, you are the master of your own discoveries. Experience the sacred shrines, mountain vistas, cool springs and the warm ones of course, on your terms.

Build your confidence

There are few things which boost one’s confidence better than embarking on a solo trip through uncharted territory alone. Talk about healthy shots of adrenaline. As you find out more about yourself, with each trial you become more confident in your abilities, more sure of the directions and sounds of your instincts. You will find that when you return, you are stronger than when you set out.

Save on expenses

Forget whatever you think about splitting costs. Traveling solo costs a lot less than travelling with a companion. When you go solo, you manage your finances a lot better; saving on certain unnecessary meals and treats and spreading out the cash for the entire trip, or saving up for souvenirs for those at home.

Meet more people

Especially if you are a single lady traveling alone, you get to meet a lot more people when you are solo than when you are with a companion or in a group. As a solo traveler you are more easily approachable and by interacting more with people around you, you get to have a lot more fun. And it is easier to find travel love when you are alone over when you are in a group or with a companion.

Move on your own time

Especially if you are traveling through a series of different cities, traveling alone grants you the opportunity to move on your own time and decide when you want to move on to the next city. When you are with someone else or in a group, you may be fed up with a particular city your companion is having fun in, or you could be having fun and the rest of your group wants to move on from the city. Traveling alone gives you the choice to decide the kind of hotel booking to make, how long you will be staying and you get to move only when you want to.
