3 Things You Must Do In Abia

If you want to pursue your love of travel and adventure, there is a destination that comes to mind when considering where to tour and boost your travel credentials in Nigeria: Abia State fits the bill perfectly. The capital is Umuahia, and its major commercial city remains Aba. Abia has been its best with its available resources, developing and harnessing the abundant potentials in tourism.  Here are three things to do when in the city’s clasping wonderment.

Witness history while you visit the Arochukwu Cave

Source: Abia State Government

The Arochukwu Cave is a fairly long dark tunnel associated with the slave trade (not as creepy as the tunnels in Harry Potter). The cave used to be a court of arbitration for the settlement of local, tribal and inter-tribal disputes. During the slave trade era, it was a key passage for moving slaves to be sold or transported outside the country through Cross River, to the Ocean port in Port Harcourt. The cave interior is dark and has many outlets, some of which are about a hundred yards away from the main entrance. There is the ‘Iyi-Eke’ flowing stream in the cave, and you will come across the Destiny Gate as well as the Gate of No Return if you choose to go further.

See the Azumini Blue River

For those who doubt there are any blue waters in the country, here is a shocker. In Abia, you get to see a blue Azumini River situated in Azumini town in Ukwa East local government. It is also about a thirty minute drive from Aba through Enugu- Port-Harcourt Expressway. The river glistens blue as you study the surrounding sands and sparkling stones. The river basin and its surrounding distributaries provide naturally rinsed gravel stones. You could go kayaking on the rapidly flowing river in some sections. The river also has a rose-scented refreshing fragrance. Enjoy the luxurious near-pink fine sand beaches by the river banks which provide pleasant places for leisure, fishing, boating, yachting, and skiing on the blue river, and you can relax by enjoying some barbeque along the beach when you are done with the water activities.

Experience Akwete Weavers’ amazing dexterity

Akwete town is located in Ukwa East local government area. The town is known to specialize in producing Akwete cloth with the use of high-warp. The special cloth has beautiful designs made from cotton, silk and various materials. The Akwete cloth comes in different patterns and motifs. Most motifs are found on one side but can also be seen on both sides sometimes. They are named according to their appearance. Examples are animals heart, children’s fingers, comb, earrings, snake-back, stool and tortoise (clever and wisdom symbols). The patterns range from plain stripes to heavy patterned cloths. Akwete weavers are very talented and have adapted to modern influences, incorporating new motifs such as the Nigerian coat of arms and other national symbols into their designs.
