Sapele is a city in Delta State, Nigeria. By the mid-19th century, Sapele was established as a trading village, occasionally visited by Europeans. Today, the city has one of Nigeria's major ports. Sapele, although consisting mainly of Urhobo indigenes and located in Delta State, is often mistaken to be a town located in Edo state as it is very close to Benin. Unique and attractive, Sapele is one of Nigeria's lesser known tourist destinations and for good reason.

1.Ferry to Benin

As Sapele is very close to Benin and actually connected to the city by ferry. The Sapele Ferry which is till today the only means of carrying motor vehicles across the river was started in January, 1929. If you are feeling a little adventurous and have not visited Benin before, you may want to seize the opportunity, rent a canoe or ferry boat from this town and row yourself all the way to Benin.

2.Try Some 'Sapele Water'

Probably the first time you heard of Sapele is when you heard the term 'Sapele Water'. A moniker for locally produced dry gin. It originates from how easily available it is and the copious amounts in which locals consume it, as if though it's water. With its distinct flavor, it's unlike anything you've drank before. This is one only for the brave.

3.River Ethiope

Believed to be Africa's deepest inland water way. The source of the River Ethiope is located in Ukwuani Local Government, close to Sapele. The river widens as it passes through Sapele and continues past seven other local government areas before flowing into the pacific. Its spring fed clear waters are another unique quality that makes River Ethiope, a popular tourist attraction.

The Aroma Foodland is the best place for people seeking a casual dining within the city. Popular for its varying range of delicious delights, the location is a must-go for anyone who loves good food. I recommend a sample of some of the local delicacies at the site.

5.Try Some Delicious Maggots

Yes your eyes do not deceive you, delicious maggots. These edible maggots or Odon as it is called by Sapele indigenes is a popular roadside delicacy. Usually grilled and skewered, it is quite delicious. The Palm Tree Weevil Larvae is a very nutritious. The maggots are usually found in dying palm trees within the forest. Don't be squeamish, have a bite.

6.Sapele Main Market

Sapele's largest market, the open air market is a go to for souvenirs, foodstuff, clothes and basically anything you need. There's a bargain to be made for every purse here. Bend down, select what you want, haggle a little (just a little) and you're sure to have a swell time. Also a great place to interact with locals.

7.Nigerian Naval Engineering College

Nigeria's first and only indigenous Navy institution. Established in 1982 , it served as a response for the navy's desire to have their personnel and various technical support trained within its shores.

8.Sapele Township Stadium

Sapele Township Stadium is a multi-use stadium in Sapele, Nigeria. It is used mostly for football matches and athletics. It is the temporary home stadium of Bayelsa United F.C. The stadium has a capacity of 16,000 people.

Sapele Athletic Club is the oldest club in Nigeria as it was founded in 1880 before Ikoyi Club, Kaduna Club, Benin Club and numerous others across the country. Despite its senescence, it remains a hub of activities for sports lovers and anyone looking to have a great day out.

10.Have Some Fresh Fish Pepper Soup

After a long day of sight seeing and fun you'll probably have worked up an appetite, never fear Sapele is famous for its fresh fish pepper soup. Being a coastal city, Sapele restaurants serve some of the best fresh fish pepper soup. Grab a cold drink along with it and if you're lucky you get to hear some urban myths about how the fish you're eating came to to be.
