Founded in 1975, the University of Port Harcourt, fondly called ‘UNIPORT’ is a second generation University with over 40,000 students and a strong focus in Petroleum Engineering. Formerly regarded as a University College, UNIPORT attained its University status in 1977 and is currently ranked amongst the top ten Universities in the Country. The University has recorded some groundbreaking achievements, one of such is its recognition as being the first University to train the first set of nuclear engineers in Nigeria. The University also won a grant from the world bank to build a centre of excellence in oilfield chemicals and is noted as one of the best institutions in Nigeria, involved in the study of business ethics and indigenous entrepreneurship development.

The University also boats of having a number of centres, institutes, including a business school.
The Institution is home to a lot of standard facilities and service utilities. Amongst them include student halls of residence, a guest inn, staff quarters, online portals, administrative buildings, faculty blocks, lecture theatres, sports facilities, a health service centre, a park (called Choba Park), an arts theatre (called the Crab) and so much more. Students and staffs of the institution can boast of having a nice learning environment that also supports extracurricular activities.
Admission into the University is highly selective, as only about 10% of applicants are successfully admitted, hence, extra care should be taken to pay attention to admission requirements and processes. The University offers admission for both Undergraduate and Postgraduate programmes.
100 Level Entry Students:
Applicants must possess a minimum of five (5) credit passes in SSCE/GCE O’LEVEL/NECO/NABTEB or equivalents at no more than two (2) sittings obtained in subjects relevant to the proposed field of study. The 5 credits must compulsorily be in Mathematics, English and 3 other related subjects.
In addition, applicants must register, sit for and attain the prescribed cut-off mark (usually 200 for sciences and 180 for non-sciences) in UTME, and also prepare for a screening process organized by the school.
To better your chances of gaining admission, its advisable to choose the institution as your University of first-choice, and also perform very well in the Post-UTME examination.
200 Level (Direct-entry) Students:
Applicants must have a National Diploma, which should come from a recognized institution in Nigeria.
Applicants are required to have a Nigerian Certificate in Education (NCE) in a subject(s) related to the proposed field of study with a minimum of one unit and two (2) advanced level passes.
Prospective students must also have an acceptable score in the Direct-entry screening exercise, and satisfy all the certificate requirements.
Applicants are required to have a first degree from a University recognized by the Senate of UNIPORT in a related field of study. A Postgraduate Diploma in a related field from a University recognized by the school would also be an added advantage.State University
Candidates applying for the Doctor of Philosophy degree programmes must possess a master's degree with a minimum score of not less than 60% or a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 3.5 on a 5-point scale, in a relevant field of study from a University recognized by the Senate of UNIPORT.
Applicants are to also forward transcripts of their academic records, three (3) referee’s reports, with (2) preferably acquainted with the candidate's academic works.
Applicants are also advised to prepare for an interactive session with the school of postgraduate studies.
Applications for the 2017/2018 academic session are currently closed, but the University is open to inquiries on admission details, process and inquiries, and sale of application forms into Undergraduate, Masters and PhD programmes.
