About University of Nairobi

The University of Nairobi is a collegiate research university based in Nairobi. Uni Nairobi is consistently ranked best university in Kenya and in the top 20 best universities in all of Africa. The University is made up of 77 departments, runs over 350 academic programmes in total and has 35 other colleges, centres and faculties and is known for its competitiveness in research and its diverse academic programmes which has made it a very popular school for research, often a recipient of various grants and in the front row of collaboration with foreign governments and corporations. With an annual research kitty of up to 4Billion Kshs (about 38m USD, UniNairobi is one of the elite universities of Africa, a world class institution.

History

The University was first established in 1956 as the Royal Technical College Nairobi which trained students in technical courses. It was then further upgraded to Royal College Nairobi wherein as was common in British colonies, it was admitted into a special relationship with the University of London and offered courses in Arts, Science and Engineering for award degrees by its parent institution. In 1964, it renamed University College Nairobi as a constituent of Federal University of East Africa which replaced UCL as its Parent. It began to exist in its current format as the first Kenyan National University in 1970 and has since then made significant strides, now also ranking 882 in the world according to UniRank Ranking of World Universities.Uni Nairobi is a relatively safe place.
